52C too hot...how to cool???

Senior member
I have a Athlon XP 1900+ (not overclocked) on a Soltek Motherboard with the stock Athlon cooler and HS. It runs at about 50C at rest. When I play games like Max Payne the temp goes to 55C and with several hours playing the box locks up. I am using an Nvidia 4200 Video card if that matters.

Any suggestions???

Can I remount a newly purchased HS and cooler???

Recommendations???

Thanks
Y

I run a 1900+ with an SK7+ and an 18db NMB fan, 38c right now. I'd reccomend a combo like that.
What's the ventillation like in your case?

55 degrees isnt too bad but if you want to get those temps down, a lot of people seem to like the Thermalright SLK 800 heatsink w/ Panaflo L1A fan to cut down noise. That + Some artic silver 3 should get you down to the high 30's or low 40's at idle and probably mid 40's under load. I also have an XP1900+ not overclocked with an Alpha PAL 8040 w/ Panaflo L1A and I get low 40's and never goes over 45 playing CS for hours.
Also do you have any intake and exhaust fans in the front and rear of your computer? If not you might want to put some in there that may help drop the temps a little.

Thermalright SLK 800

If Possible, ensure you have intake and exhaust 80mm fans. You can get generic ones for like $1!...you can also get speed control, LED ones, Whisper quiet ones....

My XP1800+ runs at about 46C idle....it's a palominio so it's a bit hotter than the Tbreds....I am using a fairly standard Coolermaster Silence Heatsink fan that can't be much better than the retail one and have 2x80mm fans at back, 1 at front.

If those temps are causing your processor to lock up, then you have a faulty processor and should return it to AMD. 55c isn't high enough to cause lockups. I run idle at 55c....when I play C&C Generals, my temps hit 60c and it NEVER locks up (I use the stock hsf too).

Yes you can improve the stock hsf, but I don't think that is your problem. I think you may have something else faulty in your system.

regards!

Superself is right. Get a better hsf if it makes you feel better, but I'm willing to bet that it's not your hsfs fault unless your temps rise by like 20 C's from idle to full. Have you consider it might be your case, northbridge, or video card cooling that might be causing the problems? You can download Prime 95 for free and it will stress your CPU to the max. Just run that for several hours and see if your comp locks up.

Yeah that is a bit high, what kind of weather do u live in though and do u ahve air conditioning? lol i've noticed that can make a difference of up to 20 degrees.

Sounds more like a heat problem relating to other than a cpu (i.e., video card, system ventilation, northbridge).

*great* comments guys. This place rocks.

OK I thought maybe it was just parts of the game locking up... Another post talked about HOTCPU Tester. So I just let that run last night and if it could make it through that I would figure I am home free. It ran for 6 hours and the box did not lock up. Woooohooo. I did check it after an hour it was running 57C. Maybe a little high but I feel better that it could run for 6 hrs and no lock up.

Can I buy the SLK and *remount* my processor to it???

Thanks a bunch for all the replies....

So you are going to shell out money for something that isn't going to solve your lockups?

That's a fair question outloat. Yes I agree my lockups seem to be because of the game but...are my temps too high??? Am I decreasing the life of the CPU by running it this hot??? I did load Unreal 2 and ran it for 3 hrs. last night with no lockups and temps seem to max at 57C.

Bottom Line:

Am I jeopardizing the life of the CPU???

Thanks

And on the 8th day, the AMD webmasters created a spreadsheet of their processors. 😀

It's a hot temp compared to what people have here because people here really know how to cool, but compared to the average case using a stock HSF, it's normal. That temp should not make your CPU lock up. My AXP2000 runs at about the same temp, with a Volcano 7 using a slow speed fan. (for quietness)

i disagree... his processor could possibly be at 70C, but his mobo readings are bad... soltek doesn't read from the die does it?

though if you say it isn't locking up anymore.. then does it just lock up on that particular game? and no it isn't shortening the life of your processor. prolly a month or two at most, than if you had it at 40C
