I had a gateway motherboard once. It was taken out of a system to upgrade it. I wanted some info on what processors it could take and such, they blew me off. It was like, "you didn't buy the system, you prolly stole the MB - go away"

instead of eggs, might I suggest a mixture of applesauce and chocolate syrup?---when it dries, it's almost impossible to clean off without damaging the glass...

$4500 bought me my first halfway decent computer (back when computers were expensive)

Pentium 100
16megs ram
2mb graphics card
14.4kbps modem
1GB hard drive
17inch monitor (still use it once in a while; not as bright now)
yada yada yada

Big upgrade from my 286 12mhz

Anyway.. it was a great buy at the time and it came with all brand-name quality components. I basically learned most of what I know about computers on that one - ever since, I've built my own. However, Gateway walked me through upgrades, reinstalls, troubleshooting, etc. I guess they were much better 7-8 years ago than they are now. They had 24-hour 800 number service and stuff.

I used Dell for work and they've never helped me near as much as Gateway has.

I still think that if you are going to buy a pre-built, Gateway would be a decent place to buy from..

Bottom line: Gateway sucks - until you've considered all the other manufacturers - Dell, Compaq (yuk)

My family has had two Gateways before I started building them. Never had a single problem with either. On the other hand, few friends have Dells that have given them many problems. I've always liked Gateway.

<< ... I need a gross of eggs >>

I read this somewhere... You get about a doz eggs and poke a little on the top and then put it in the garage or somewhere warm for couple days/weeks. Once you get it cover the hole and you now have STINK BOMBS :)

I personally have serviced more Gateway computers than any other retail/name brand box. They become really good machines after you upgrade them with non proprietary componenets! Those old desktop cases just refuse to die...

After the crappy HSF setup in my computer at work and the fact that the PS blew away 3 hard drives I wouldn't buy one. Thank god for a high quality local shop!

Pre-built systems are great for people who know nothing about PC's, seeing that they'll screw them up anyhow :D

I bought an old P166, a Comqrap Deskpro, to use it as a proxy. Well, to keep it short, I had to disassemble nearly the whole system before I could make one PCI NIC fit in a PCI slot. Without disassembling, the card fitted nearly, except for 1.5 millimeter...

So far for Comqrap quality :D

We leased some gateway P-266's laptops about two 1/2 years ago. Paying something like 250 a month each for the clunkers. The lease is up and they want another $3000 to buy them out. Were just going to return them and go some where else. What a joke!

Sorry that you're having problems with your PC. :(

Considering most companies don't give free support past 90 days and RARELY do they extend service past a year, I'd say Gateway is not all that bad on their judgement to not tech support a machine that's two years old.

If you built the machine yourself, most of those parts only have a one year warranty and good luck getting tech support past 30 or 90 days from whoever you bought it from.

It sucks, but it's true.

My father in law had a friend with a Dell. He was having problems and the guy at Dell told him he needed to start the process by formatting the computer and reinstalling Windows. The customer wasn't too upset about it because he only had 90 days worth of data on the hard drive.

He started the format, and the Dell rep told him that he had to let him go because he couldn't wait for the drive to format. Dell gave the customer no case number or anything. The next day, the customer calls back to ask "now what" and the people on the phone told him, "Sorry. This is your 91st day of ownership. Tech support will be offered at a rate of $25 per minute."

He boxed it up and shipped it back and called his credit card company to dispute the charges. :Q

Now Now, people! My dad used a Gateway Pentium Pro 200 for 5 years without a single hardware problem. Although I have upgraded my box quite a bit, it is still a Gateway G6-450. Other then a problem with the original TV Tuner card, the computer has been flawless. I can't diss Gateway. There was a time when I didn't know squat about PCs, and a Gateway Tech Support rep talked me through formatting and stuff during a 5-hour phone call the day after Christmas! I have no problem recommending Gateway.

Alot of Compaq bashing going on here.....I have had nothing but A+ support from Compaq, get the parts next day 99% of the time, Gateway on the other hand, took 2.5 months to fix a laptop I took in to them and then when they gave it back to me the screws that hold the HD in were missing so it took another 4 weeks to get those replaced.
