Never heard of it specifically but sometimes it's not really the resolution that matters as much as the aspect ratio when it comes to movies. (ok, resolution DOES matter... 😛)

What is that resolution for anyway?

DVD resolution is 720x480 (and just because it's alwasy 720x480 doesn't mean that the movie is. A 16:9 movie would be (IIRC) 640x360 or 720x405, not sure which one.
That resolution is a 16:9 resolution (512/288=1.777777777778=16/9)
