I browsed over to newegg, and there are no 512mb video cards. What gives? So to run in ultra mode you need something that doesnt exist yet?

Is now the wrong time to spend 400 - 500 on a video card for a brand new system?

Any advice towards purchasing a 256mb video card would be welcome in terms of a 512 due out.. not in terms of which brand ati or nvidia is better.

Thanks

No 512MB video cards yet AFAIK, but the GeForce6800GT seems to be the best value card out ATM.

And by value I mean in the high end as it's ~$400. I'm presonally waiting until the 6800GT's stabilize near the $300 mark, with hot deals at or below $300.

i think carmack (or maye i read it somewhere else) said that any of the new high end cards (with 256) will run the ultra setting just fine, just like any of the higher end 128 meg cards will run the high setting just fine.

if you have a good processor and a good graphics card you'll be happy, don't sweat it. you don't need "ultra-super-deluxe-we're-laughing-at-you-all-the-way-to-the-bank" everything for the game, even if ati/nvidia want you to think otherwise.

I think if your going to dish out the money now is a good time..

I would go at least X800, 6800..

Even though a 9800 Pro will run it well.. THe extra hundred with bring impressive gains and last quite a bit longer... Hopefully longer than the 9700 Pro which by far had the longest reign of #1. And will run just about anygame currently maxed out.

That should ensure most next generation games running off D3 and HL 2 engines should run 1024x768 Everything maxed or high settings...

Look how long the quake 3 engine lasted..

I doubt 512 mb cards will be available until next year with the next evolution of the chips. i mean, look how long it takes to get hold of an ultra at the mo. Go with the BFG 6800GT, there performance is near Ultra's, there $100 cheaper, you can actually find them, theres a lifetime warranty, and you can get a pre installed waterblock version.

Just need to find somewher that stocks them in th UK
