I am getting ready to upgrade the RAM on this pig and remember hearing a few people say that W98 doesnt like that much RAM, any truth to this? Also IS there any difference in gaming between 256mb or 512mb total RAM?

Machine is a 1.1ghz/196mb pc100(mobo wont handle 133)/Gforce2 64mb.

Thanks, really look forward to hearing peoples input on this......

Yeah, I've heard that win9x can only manage up to 256 efficiently... any higher, and performance will actually decrease. Use a NT-based OS (NT, 2k, XP) and that 512 should be useful. I still think it's overkill though.

The decrease is a myth. I have 512 on my win98 machine, and it performs the same as it did with 128. The only difference I notice is when I run many apps. at once.

Okay, so you're saying it doesn't decrease but it doesn't seem to help either. I say save your money and get the 256, tony.

Kitros said The only difference I notice is when I run many apps. . I consider that an improvement, no?

Although Windows 95/98/ME can access 2GB of system memory, it was not designed to work efficiently with large amounts of system memory.

Now I'm really , really confused.........

Should I go with 512? I mean if I'm doing a lot of stuff like listening to live radio via broadband, sanning photos etc.etc will the extra 256mb=512 be worth it?

Damn.... roughly one year ago I started to buy gear to build a new system, now I come back and WHAT IN THE HELL happened to the price of ram? How and why did it get sooooo cheap? :) Sweet!

I recently upgraded from 256 to 512 meg RAM. My system is now more stable. I have seen a tenth the number of crashes and BSOD than before the upgrade.

Considering how cheap RAM is now, it is worth your time to buy more and try it in your system
