512MB sgl channel VS 1GB dual channel

Hi,

Im getting some OCZ 3200 EL platinum Rev2 and im not sure if i should get a single stick of 512mb or the DC kit (2 X 512). Ill be using it on a Athlon 64 3000+ s939 + MSI K8N neo2 Platinum. Is there a real big difference between 512 mb of sgl channel vs 1GB of dual channel (big ebough to justify the extra 200 Cdn?).

Thx

As always, depends on the application. Doom3 for example lives happily in 512 MB, but if you have 1 Gb you can use it for Doom-internal caching via some console magic. And obviously it works for filesystem caching.

Dual-channel however will be very hard to notice, speed-wise

Says the dude with 1 GB RAM 🙂

Apps? If you want to talk about "worth" that OCZ LL ram has a horrendous price to performance ratio. If you can only afford one stick, you ought to buy the cheapest PC3200 x 2 and have dual channel and 1024 MB for the same price and better performance being both dual channel and more ram.

Hey MDE about your sig. I've run a 6800GT on a 250watt PSU. A dell 400sc with a PCP&C 250watt.

But yeah. I say buy 2x512 of some cheaper stuff. Ideally your looking for something that will hit the 3700 range at 2.5-3-3 with a slight vdimm boost. A lot of pc3200 can do that. Do your research before you buy.

Buy the dual kit. That is some great memory but pricey. You can get a dual kit 2x512 of samsung for around $160 these days.

Hmmm... I already did do some research before i decided to go with the OCZ cause i plan to overclock the hell outta the 3000+......the 3200 rev2 seems like it overclocks well.....actually that would be an understatement 😛 Oh we,, i guess ill go for the 1gb 😛 thx guys

ocz is becoming a better choice because the price at the egg now is about $275 for 2 x 512's which is pretty good...

pqi, gskill, geil ultrax, pdp (patriot) are all good choices as well... as they all use the brainpower pcb over the standard jedec reference
