512MB sd Kingston but actual storage is 489?

My 512mb kingston sd card just arrived 2day. I put this sucker into my rio S10 player(which has an initial storage of 64mb) and then check the storage indication and I see the Kingston card capacity is only 488. WHat the heck happened to the other 23 mb? or better yet what is actually on the sd card initially? Do i have to format it to get 512mb?

512,000,000 /1024^2 ~= 488

sounds about right to me

it's becuse storage manufacturers use a different definition of kilobyte/megabyte (1000 and 1000^2) from windows (1024 and 1024^2)

o dear god.

ill refer you to the FAQ's but i dont know the link find those and search for HD space or missing space and you will find the reason

One would think that on a tech forum, that everyone would now the different between decimal and binary conversion and overhead needed for the FAT

He's asking about a memory card, not a hard drive with operating system. 😕

Memory cards like CF still have to be formatted using FAT.

Uh, no. You got what you paid for - 512 decimal megabytes of storage. You going to sue Canada next because you buy a gallon of gas and get 3.78L instead?

yeah, this question gets posted once a month, at least

I'd like to think there are more important things to worry about in life.

There are people that are living in poverty, people who haven't had a meal in a few days, people who don't have a roof over their head, people whose entire lives they've seen nothing but how sh!tty the world can be. There are people who are dying for what they believe in and people killing to benefit their own lives. Then there are people who want to know where their 23MB of storage went on a memory card. Seems totally worthwhile to me.

same thing only from SanDisk...it's with all of them. 23MB isn't much to me...i do however get pissed off when I buy a 250GB Hard drive, but can only use 244GB

no it's not since they say that they define a megabyte as 1,000,000 bytes. Just like all the other storage makers out there.
