512MB or 768MB RAM

I recently bought this system

1.33 Ghz AMD
DDR Mobo with RAID
512MB DDR Crucial RAM
2x 75gxp's in raido
Geforce 3
(and some other goodies )

I can not believe how cheap the DDR ram is now though, 256MB PC2100 for $80!!!

should i get another module and fill all my slots? I plan to play games a lot and photoediting and 3dmax 4 as well. Do i need it? thanks

Actually, Opeleg, if you go to the right options at the Crucial website, you can get 256MB of PC2100 for $74. First thing next week, I'm buying myself 512MB for my new system - Win2k is too slow with 128MB. BTW, what OS are you running? Only the NT kernels can take advantage of 256MB+ if I remember correctly.

Here's a link to my bookmark of what I'm planning on purchasing. This link leads to the Asus A7M266 page at Crucial, but you can clearly see the Web Price for $74. If you go through their website normally, you'll pay $79 for the same thing. Pretty weird, eh?

What OS are you running? If Win2K, go for it. If WinME or 98, don't bother.

even if you are running 98.. buy it.. don't open it.. and whenever you change operating systems.. add the other ram.. or when you actually need it ..

why not with win98? I cant run 3dstudio max 4 with win98? I have win2k now but i'm thinking of going back to win98 for my games (you gotta love that frame rate )

if you use over 512Mb of ram in win 98 you'll get "out of memory errors" unless you do a little tweaking! look here!

get as much ram as you can afford. that's the best thing.

but be aware of the 512 bug on the win9x kernel.

Ok first of all, definitely stick with Win2k if you work with Max4. Max runs a million times more stable than in Win98/WinME. Second, 512mb should be enough unless you do some heavy-duty photoshop or 3dwork in which case the extra 256mb will help you immensly
