I purchased PQI power memory MD3412UOE 512MB DDR-333 PC2700 modules. My computer says it can take up to 1 gig of DDR-333 memory. I had two slots filled with 256 memory sticks for a total system memory of 512. I replaced them with PQI and expected to see 1 gig, but instead it said 512. I then swapped them to see if one of the chips may have been bad and it booted just fine and again said 512. I removed one leaving only 1 installed, and rebooted, and it now say 256. How can these be 256 meg chips though they say 512 PC2700. They also are double sided (chips on both side) whereas my 256 ones had chips only on one side. I have other 512 meg chip with dual sides that worked fine in my other computers, all my computers are the same.

I do have a 512 card that is a PC2100 and it works fine. I put a 512 of the new memory (PC2700) in the computer that had a 512 of PC2100 and it came up as having only 768meg. Any idea what the problem is?

BTW the first issue above was with (2) 512meg PC2700 inserted and it read only 512 total.

I thought if I put PC2700 with a PC2100, they would run at the lower speed, and if I put (2) PC2700 it would run at the higher speed. Do I need to change something on the board? Why would 512 meg chips register as 256?

*************UPDATE***********

One of my other computer already had (2) pc2700 512mb sticks in the computer and it did register as 1 gig. I took those and put them into the other computers and they also read 1 gig. I took the new ones and put it into the one that already had the 1 gig, and it showed only 256. I cant think it is the computer. Can the chips really be bad?

Hmm, that RAM gets pretty solid reviews at Newegg--however, some reviewers note problems similar to yours, especially with Compaq and Dell PCs:

Also,

Doesn't work with MSI KT3 Ultra

Since your computer reads the other 1GB fine, and the PC that read the first 1GB can't read these new modules, it sounds like it is time for an RMA....

Note that you can use DDR400 modules, and they will run at DDR333 if that is fastest motherboard will go--gives you more purchasing options. I do recommend Kingston and Crucial, as their modules are guaranteed to work--you can use their memory configuator, and then with model #, shop for price.

Yeah,

I emailed the manufacturer about it over the weekend, and will call the seller tonight.

Thanks for the info.

They had me download a program, run it, and send them the results, and they sent me an RMA for it. The thing that sucks is that I shouldnt have to pay for shipping to them.
