Rumor has it the 7800GTX 512 is going to be a shortlived card due to even better coming out later so I wouldnt really get worked up about getting a 512 version. Get a 7800GTX 256 now or wait until the next Generation comes out middle of this year.

Sold both of my evga GTX 512's on ebay a few days ago and pretty much broke even. $1k is insane. :Q Now I don't feel so bad paying $699ea. on November 12th when they first showed up on monarch. I now have a 6200TC 64MB 64bit card to hold me off till the G71 shows up. Talk about a step down :p

Smart dude, very smart. get out while the getting is good.

As for these far overpriced Cards go, they make me more angry than anything. They make up all this crap about 'shortages' and 'unavailablity'. But what I hear when I see that is ' we are screwing you the best we can', The MSRP is wayy below what the e-tailers are selling them for, so get out while you can. The G71 seems to kill it, from what rumor's say.

I did the same with my 256GTX's. They had pretty much plummeted in value since I bought them, but I still recouped about 75% of what I spent after having then for about 6 months. I imagine that once the G71 is out, the value of the GTX 512 is going to drop as well. The same is about to happen to my X1800XT, but it wasn't nearly as expensive as my SLI set.

Yup. I just moved over to PCIe and got a basic 7800GT.
Its plenty for todays games. I can run Q4 and D3 just fine. Got FEAR running at 40 FPS with max settings, (excluding soft shadows of course).
I'll get another card in a year or so for much cheaper than a grand.

Is it a good idea to sell one of my GTs now or wait two months? I want to upgrade my setup to most likely a single G71 card when it comes out, which looks like it's going to be just after my step-up period with EVGA ends. I paid $300 each for them and they go for about $270-300 at the moment on ebay, so I could get back most of what I paid. I will only be selling one card since I have a future use for the other one, so I can still keep one in my main system. I suppose I won't be able to use the SLI speeds in the meantime, but I'm ending up only using SLI mode in about half of my games anyway due to compatibility issues.

CP5670,
I'd wait till you actually get the new card but thats just me. Hard to say when exactly that could be so why go with less? As many PCs as I have though I tend to trade video downwards to older existing PCs. Again, thats just how I am.

My prediction

They make a much larger shipment of these right at the x1900 release, seeing as msrp is $699 then 2 things might happen

1)they will be far more of them so resellers can't gouge as much
2)1900 is cheaper and better so no one will pay inflated prices anyway.

Then as stated these will run out in feb(eol) making the early march release of the G71 easier to believe.

But with the near release of 580/G71, I can't understand why there is a demand for these at these prices.

Another quick predict
This card basically becomes the 7900GT The thing is it's made from the bad yields of the gtx giving you up to 2 bad quads(24 pipe 600-650 core 512 ram) and fills the gap between the7900gtx 512 and 7800gtx 256 which helps to keep costs down for both cards
(hows that for a prediction)
