51-58 degrees Celcius

Quite high, isn't it?

Using Athlon XP 2200+ on an Abit NF7 mobo, with Thermaltake Volcano 6Cu and Arctic Silver 3 on my friend's mobo. He got the "long beep" on startup and had to restart--when he did everything was oK, except temperatures were at 51-58C (when I first tested the system, start up temps were at 40C). I suspect "pockets" in the thermal paste. Since it's not in my hands, I can't reapply the paste to find out. I would simply like suggestions in order to prepare the tools necessary before I make the fix-it trip.

51-58 under load or idle? If its Underload thats fine, if its just idling then its a little high.

I had the Thermaltake Cu6+ on a TBird 1.33GHz processor and I was getting temps around 50+ and the fan on that Heatsink was better than the regular Cu6. Maybe you can lap the heatsink and reinstalling it, might drop the temps a few degrees. Heatsink also might need a good cleaning as well.

I run an AMD retail HSF w/ a CPU temp of 134F (56C). And that's an XP2000+. So given the better HSF, I'd be concerned that the HSF was applied correctly.

Nothing to really be concerned about. My 1700+ o/c to 2.2ghz, 1.7v runs @ 52-54C idle, 58-60C under load w/an 8045, AS3 and 32cfm fan. It never crashes.
