For the record, I ended up purchasing the 35mm 1.8G from Amazon for $200. Takes great photos, and I am really happy with it. 🙂

Thank you all for the great advice that lead me to that purchase.

Good choice sir. If you've never used a fast prime lens and are only used to "slow" kit lenses....it's going to to blow your mind a little bit once you realize how much more light it can suck in, thinner depth of field it can get...ect. It is definitely a bargain at $200!

On aps-c senors you need something like a 32mm lens to get the neutral human perspective that the old 50mm lenses were designed around. I found a cheap 28mm f1.7 lens that I use the same way that 50mm prime used to be used on full frames. People these days stick to 50mm because they tend to be the cheapest fast lenses, but they are telephoto lenses on most DSLR cameras.

Great choice. I've had the 50/1.8 for quite a while and it was my favorite lens on my D50. Fell out of the hobby for a few years and when I came back, for some reason the 50mm just wasn't wide enough for me anymore. I picked up the 35/1.8 for my new D7100 and now the 50mm will likely never be used again.
