Want opinions on whether my powersupply is dying or just overloaded. I previously had a 7900GT and just upgraded to a X1900XT. Now whenever any 3D processing is being done i get a loud whine from the Power Supply. The power supply is a 500watt Antec Smart Power 2.0. I am running an E6400 oc'd to 3200mhz, 3 case fans, 1 optical drive, 1 hard drive. I would think 500watts and 36amps combined on the two 12v rails would be able to handle this. I plan on upgrading to an Enhance ENS-0560G and am going to get rid of the Antec but don't know if it needs RMA'd before selling it and is it relatively safe to use like this untill a replacement power supply gets here?

Come on!! Open it up and find the leaking, venting, bulging, swelling, tilting, stinking
Fuhjyyu capacitors. Caps go out of spec and coils will whine & cry ;)
Most here that have an Antec go bad...just buy another

Your call if your going to keep running it to failure.

If you do buy an ENS-0560G, try to get the current model thats RoHS compliant.
It will have a green leaf on the sticker. It's just a tad better than the one I bought.

Funny thing is that so far I haven't had an Antec PSU fail.. Yet.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the power supply and not the card?

Enhance has two types of RoHS stickers. The one w/ the green leaf and one that's plain RoHS circular.

Baked, I do believe RoHS is the same with or w/o the green leaf.
I've only seen it with the green leaf.

I'm sure its coming from the power supply, I dont hear anything by the card even with its fan turned down, and I can hear the sound distinctly when I listen near the exhaust of the powersupply. I don't want to open it up b/c its still under warranty its only 2 months old. And those of you that are familiar with the ENS-0560G is their a good place to purchase it besides ewiz. I bring up a few other vendors with a google search but am unfamiliar with them.

I've never had an issue with eWiz. Just check the resellers ratings on the vendor you choose.

I thought whines come from fans..including psu fans. But yea..I trust Antec but I wouldn't use their SmartPower series for heavy extended PC use. I'd RMA it..sell it and use another brand or a truepower.

also.........
For some magnetic materials like the iron rod used in the inductors and transformers, the meterial's dimension changes as the magnetic domains inside are forced into another direction. And since transformers work by constantly changing magmetic fields some energy is lost this way as sound.
