500mhz Katmai's smpable?

Yes, the 500MHz Katmai is definitely SMP-able. I have 2 at work.

lowtech: the FC-PGA cA2 stepping of the P3 Coppermines are not SMP capable.

Well, technically you don't have to have identical CPUs. They just have to be running at the same speed. At work I found a P2 233 and put it into a Dual P2 mobo with a P2 200. Both are running at 200Mhz in a duel configuration just fine. You would obviously only want to do something like this on an old system where you don't really care about the lost Mhz. Or maybe overclock the slower one.

This is a little harder to pull off with multiplier locked CPUs though.

Hehe....dual socket 7's....I've seen them actually 🙂 It was hilarious seeing the guys face, 'cause he thought that his dual P54 200's beat out a Pentium 2 400....LMAO....

But, as dszd0g said, its possible to run two CPU's asyncronously...though the person that I know that ran it that way said it wasn't stable 😛
