I have been reaping the benefits here, and decided to post, sorry if this is only warm, but seemed like a good one to me.

Yeah, yeah, it's a Maxtor drive, but I've had pretty good luck with them. The one I did have replaced was replaced with a higher capacity, anyway. 🙂

Thanks.

Isn't it $0.358/GB?

My calc might be broken. 🙂

Edit - you caught your math error. 😉

Big storage in one drive is a premium you pay for.

Deal killer is retail Maxtor drives having 1 year warranty 🙁

Seagates are far better around the same price

Atleast get two Seagate 320GB SATA2 16MB HDDs i believe that does perpendicular shiz?

I ordered one of these last night, ive been looking for a 500GB drive for a couple months and was waiting for a sale like this.

I would not bet on that. I had a Seagate 160gb SATA drive. It was hot and loud as hell. I really mean when I say HOT and I really mean when I say loud.
I have seen many posts about the new Seagate drive with 300gb+ SATAI or II running very hot.

My 4 Maxtor 300gb SATA w/ 16mb cache are extremely silent, meaning I cannot EVER hear them and they are running very cool. When I touch them they feel like room temp because I do not feel any heat at all.

I have to say I myself have a better opinion of Seagate harddrives than Maxtor and the reason for that are these forums. But now I wake up and actually look at reality and my own experience and I have to say that the reality is exactly the opposite. This is of course my reality so you do not have to take it as real for yourself.

I can only recommend Maxtor drives. I am also paranoid no matter what brand I use so my harddrives run in Raid 1 or Raid 5 to make sure any problems do not cost me my precious data. I recommend the same to everybody no matter what drive you use.

You don't know much about Large capacity HDs do you?

Thats rough but thats exactly what I was thinking.... Large capacity hard drives cost a little more per GB.

I'm still waiting for the 500s to drop to $130 or thereabouts. It's not about $/GB anymore, but more about how much I'm willing to pay for a disk. Considering the verticals are out, and the first 750 has shipped, $180 for a 500GB drive seems high to me. At least that's how I feel since I'm not space constrained (about 2 TB at home on 10 disks, but that's another story)

while its not a bad price....i think its a great price - but I'm cheap and i have to agree with you.

If i can get it closer to $150 even...i plan on buying some, when you're looking at buying 6-10 drives it pays off to save $20-30/drive

wd ftw !

That is the most stupid thing I've seen all day.

Almost every single WD i've owned or have passed through my hands (probably over 20-30) has this annoying high pitched whine. I'm talking so High pitched at first i thought it was a faulty fan, but change it out with another drive, and bam silence in the room, just ambient fan noise.

Just my humble experience. Seagates have not been quite as spectacular lately for quality and noise as well. I have not experienced the 7200.10 yet, but have had every single series before that.

Anyone miss the Cuda IV's?
