Because, inevitably, they would be changing themselves. Everthing that has happened in history has effected they way the world is now, and if even a little part of the past is changed, it will have a domino effect upon every other even in history.

If they cant even get to mars without their spaceships breaking up, how the hell do they expect them to last for 50000 years?

because one cannot travel into the past. one can only vary the rates they travel into the future.

Yet another paradox. If someone went back in time say 5000 years to change something. That would mean that history has changed, and if history has changed, than the people who went back in time would probably never have existed to change history in the first place! The paradox being, how can they change something back in time if history got altered due to them and they probably will never exist?

AHHH! Finally someone understands! :) I have been trying to explain this to people for years, but everyone just gives me the "confused dog with their head cocked to the side" look.

Alright...who's going to submit "All your base are belong to us!"
If they cant even get to mars without their spaceships breaking up, how the hell do they expect them to last for 50000 years?
:Q
That almost made tears come out of my eyes from all the laughing!

They probably don't want to risk causing a rip in the fabric of the space-time continuum. ;)

Because hopefully they all work in kilometers or all in miles this time and don't make the same idiotic mistake that any kid in highschool could have realized would be a problem.

I would put a record of all known science so we can get a head start if we go back to the stone age..... if we can read the damn stuff....

There are time travel cops, from the way way distant future. They arrest and possibly kill anyone who makes an attempt at going back into time to screw the timeline.
