I have $5000 that I want to spend on a fun weekend car.

Requirements:
-RWD
-Open top (targa, t-top, convertible - sunroof doesn't count)
-Manual transmission
-Easy to work on
-Good handling characteristics

Preferences:
-Quick
-Not something you see every day
-Easy on insurance

Any other qualities I really don't care about. Suggestions?

$5,000 won't get you anything uncommon, but it can get you something fast.

Fox body 5.0 Mustangs (GT and LX) or a LT1 F Body (pre 1998).

The F Body might push your budget a little, but there are some available for just a little more than $5K.

i sold my porsche 914 a few months ago for 3k... meets all your criteria.. except, probably, the easy to work on.

there are lots of resources on the web... this is one of the best.

for 5k, you can get something pretty decent.

Miata

or a 240SX

$5K for a drop top in RWD is near impossible to find in good running order.

a pre-98 fbody with t-tops. can't go wrong with a 6-speed LT1, plus they are easy to work on, and parts don't have high mark-up.

miata

everyone makes fun of them until they drive one :p They are very fun cars to drive.

you can easily find a great looking low mile miata for 5k.

I noticed the same thing when I was looking for one, there are a lot of people asking insane money. Well into F-Body territory for less potential.

Kinda silly.

Dang - some of you have some real problems reading eheh

My first thought was actually a Fiero GT T-Top. I'm going to have to try out a Miata...

I haven't really been interested in cars lately... so I'd probably get one of these and one of these. I should be able to get them both for a bit under $5000.

I would avoid the Fiero, there's a reason they weren't around very long.

How exactly do you feel we're misreading you?

You're demanding a lot for $5K, it's the equivalent of someone posting this:

I want a new computer to play games, but I can only spend $200.

Requirements:

3.4 GHz or greater speed
256 MB video card
2 GB RAM
15K RPM U320 RAID 5 Array

Preferences:

20" or larger LCD
No rebates please
