$500 for a new rig what parts to get ?

I'm plaining on building a new pc & need your help doing so.I wanna keep the price at around $500 for everything.Keep in mind i already got a moniter/lcd so wont be needing that.A new wireless keyboard & mouse will be good.No floopy or 56k modem needed also.i use high speed internet here & never use a floopy for anything.

What i wanna do with this system -

Burn DVDS - At least a 8x DVD-R burner
Watch cable TV & connect my Xbox to my moniter. Would like to get one of those tv tuner cards that comes with a remote.
Store large size files - In other words i need a large & fast HD.
Not into anytype of gaming so a nice budget video card will do.Dont want a out dated old one.
I also will be using this pc to convert mpegs & stuff like that so the cpu & ram should be fast.I perfer AMD.
Nice but not to much sound card will do also. I listen to alot of music & already have my speakers so no need for those.

Thats about it. Oh also i'll like to buy all the parts from one place such as newegg onless i can pick it up here local. Dont really wanna sit around waiting for different packages from different places.

Im pretty sure i can put toegther a way better system then that for $600. BTW there isn't any moniter included in that deal.

No problem. At first i was like damn this isn't that bad for $600 but then when i started to read it said no moniter included.

Still pretty decent actually. e-Machines has upped the quality lately. Just get a 9800Pro for $200 and you got a decent gaming rig.

He said he doesn't game. So a 9800 Pro is way more than he needs.

I know. Just thinking out loud.

My recommendations:
CPU: A64 2800+ - $140 (newegg)
Mobo: Epox nForce3 250GB - $75 (newegg)
Ram: 512MB Corsair Value Ram - $75 (newegg)
Optical: NEC or Sony Dual Layer DVD+-R/+-RW - $70 (newegg)
Hard Drive: Any SATA drive with a big rebate. Check slickdeals, techbargains, or fatwallet for deals on these. I'd say go for somthing in the 160-200GB range, should be under $100 if you find a good deal.
Video Card: Radeon 9550 128MB - $60 (newegg)
TV card: ATI TV Wonder Pro - $50 After rebates (bestbuy)

That's about as cheap as you can get without going really bargain basement on the CPU/Mobo. This is way faster than anything else in its price range.

If you're going to buy components to build a system, do no, I repeat DO NOT buy them from newegg! They charge you shipping per item, so if you want to buy a whole slew of things you're going to end up paying $40 in shipping fees. I built my comp. about two months ago and ended up saving a good chunk by getting the same stuff from mwave. A bit higher prices but the shipping price made the difference.

Don't forget the case.

Hmm, if you don't game and are more of a multimedia kinda guy, you might wanna consider Intel, something around the 2.4 ghz range for about 140 bucks. Their hyperthreading can be pretty beastly...

For a vid card the 9600SE would work, even if it is a POS SE, you won't need much out of it, and they generally cost around 80 bucks.

About the sound: If quality isn't too big a thing for you and you just wanna listen to music, you can live with the onboard sound, a sound card will add another 40 bucks or so onto your budget, even a low end one.

Everything else posted by Gobucks looks fine.

If he's not doing too much hardcore gaming, he could go down to maybe a 5200 or a 9200. They're going pretty much dirt cheap now, 50 bucks on newegg. Ain't too bad.

So far i'm looking at these items -

Pioneer Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive, Model DVR-108, OEM $79
EPoX "EP-8KDA3J" nForce3-250Gb Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL $73
AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor - Retail $141
APOLLO RADEON 9200SE Video Card, 64MB DDR, 64-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "Devil Monster 3 Radeon 9200SE 64" -RETAIL $34.60
Leadtek PCI TV/FM Tuner Card, REMOTE, Model "WinFast TV2000 XP Expert" -RETAIL $51

Total for those is $378.60

I still need some Ram/Hard Drive/Case & i think thats it. I could push the budget to $600 max. Lmk what yours think about the above parts.

19" monitor, mid-tower case, and full component loadout was shipped to me for about.. 33 dollars.. and I ordered before 12 noon PST and therefore recieved free 1 day processing. 4 days total to get to my door, 33 dollars, lots of stuff.

Not bad if you ask me.

sound card : chaintech vnf card(dont know if that is spell right). hard drive then you can either go pata or sata, can get 200 gb of pata for around 60 dollars if the deal still going from fry. get a used video card from the trade/sell forum, is a ti 4200 good enough, guys ?.
Also, the tv tuner haupegauge one, they will come out with a new card 150 i think, may come out already, which is pretty good for 75 dollars ( not sure about the price). So check it out.

I cant spell at all today, oh well, hope this help

That is about as good as your budget will get you.
If you need a fast HD, then you need a WD raptor, or any SCSI. But that is expensive. SATA is the way to go for you, particularly 7200RPM.
