Friend has $500 to put together a gaming PC. Thats not including the monitor. I am gonna buy some of the parts new like the motherboard and probably the CPU. But I might get the rest used if I can so he might be able to squeeze in some better parts.

thats not a bad deal at all but he wants a custom Athlon 64 system. Pretty much what is the best low budget mobo with decent o/cing features? I am sure I can squeeze the rest in. I am not familar with which low budget mobo's are good.

A single-core 3700+ - 3800+ is fast enough to not bottleneck a 7900GT without needing to overclock. Get that in socket 939 and a Biostar TForce mATX motherboard for under $180.

Add
$86 shipped - Antec NSK4400
$37 Nec 3550A retail with Nero Express
$55 Samsung 160GB HD

Used RAM, academic license for XP if he's at a college that has a site license, used video card.

$600 is more realistic, or $700 with a legal copy of Windows.
