This was more just for fun...and I know about the build guide you linked to.

Your argument is quite weak though, "You only have to spend 25% more to potentially get a slight performance gain!" Most builds are sure to get some performance boost with 25% more money. The PC list I came up with is $400 while the i3 build is $500.

I thought that the build was competent. A gaming rig, overclockable hex-core (though, AMD), and a gaming GPU (at the minimum for 1080P), WITH Windows OS, monitor, and KB + MSE, all for $500? Sounds good to me.
