main use: for travelling and processing video conversion (ie, converting my camera video avi files to a smaller size). also the occasional gaming to play WoW.

thanks

For $500, you arent going to be able to find much. You may want to check the FS/T Forum here to see if anyone is selling one used, and alos check ebay. You might consider picking up a end of run iBook, it will be able to run WoW no problem, and handle the video conversion pretty well. A drawback would be that it wouldnt be dualcore.

thanks, well i was looking at the hot deals forums and I see all these laptops for like $499 (acers, etc) and so i thought they might be able to play WoW, but looks like they dont have a good enough vid card in them. Well I will keep looking

Bear in mind that my grandfathers pocket watch can run WoW (ok, maybe not, but the idea is there) it really does not take a whole lot in terms of power in order to run it.

Where you will need oomph (at least for time reduction) is for the video encoding. You won't need a good graphics card (check my sig, I use that machine on a daily basis for a whole range of tasks including weekly ripping/encoding/converting of DVDs). However, I do have a dual core processor, and that helps quite a bit.

You should keep your eyes open for some back-to-school sales - Staples and Office Depot typically have something in your price range that won't suck too badly.

That should have no problems running WoW, and if anything it'll be memory limited. The Vostro line is supposingly very good from what I've heard; none of the cr@p software that usually comes pre-installed. If you can bear the horrendous looks of the laptop it's a good deal.
