$500-$600 laptop?

best bang for the buck used laptop? price range is 500-600, and we won't be gaming on it so high end video isn't a big deal, but would be nice if it fits our budget.

if you're not in a hurry, dell has a great sale (over $750 off) on laptops during christmas. however, if you must get one now, for that price range, i'd probably look into a used laptop. in fact, you might possibly get a pentium m (banias) for that price.

we need it by the 9th of march, so i'm kinda in a hurry...any websites you would recommend for laptop refurbs? or should we just scrounge around on ebay?

If you buy used, buy a model that's known to have good hinges. MANY notebooks have their lid/monitor hinges fail after 1 - 3 years of opening and closing.

^^^ Very good point, and oft overlooked. That's how my IBM Thinkpad 701C finally died. I bought it used, and it was actually a very nice laptop, small, lightweight (no internal CD-ROM nor floppy), nice active TFT screen. Sure, it was only a 486, but was good enough for "portable" tasks like note-taking, and could be used as a terminal using NetMeeting/RDP to control my main machine. It also had the fold-out "butterfly" keyboard, which was a really nice feature, but also its downfall, since that added additional stress to the hinge mechanism over and above the usual wear+tear. That was a great little laptop, and still had a nearly full-size keyboard, I really kind of miss it. If anyone knows offhand of any models that still have fold-out keyboards like that, drop me a PM or something.

Or just buy a mainstream model that has tons of parts available on ebay. Most dell models fit this description. You can buy an entire shell for under $20 often.

LOL... I just sold my laptop the next model up with an amd 2400XP 256 ram 40 gig... HP ze4400 for 550 w/ laptop bag
