Fifty years ago today, a fire during a "dress rehearsal" test killed the crew of Apollo One.

It was such a tragedy, but NASA did learn a few things from the horrific accident. Even to this day, I can recall the astronauts' names who died without thinking about it. Sorta etched upon my mind.

I remember that and I have either the Washington Post or Evening Star that reported it at home someplace with other newspapers I have saved over the years.

Using pure Oxygen inside that capsule and making the hatch difficult to open for an emergency was a big big mistake they learned from.

Yeah, I remember that as well. It's also amazing how quickly NASA responded, corrected the issues, and got back up and running. If this had happened today, it probably would've taken 3-5 years to get back into space.

Well we live in an age where it takes 2 years to fix the elevator in the Washington Monument so 3-5 years sounds about right.
