DENNIS, Massachusetts (CNN) -- Rescuers from the Cape Cod Stranding Network are frantically trying to keep some 55 pilot whales alive until high tide.

The whales were discovered early Monday morning on Chapin Beach in Dennis, on Cape Cod Bay, a spokeswoman said.

Volunteers have been pouring water on the whales and covering them with towels to regulate their body temperatures.

Officials did not speculate as to how or why the whales beached themselves but they said it is a natural phenomenon.

The Associated Press reports that this is one of the largest mass strandings of pilot whales on the Cape since the early 1990s.
