Personally, for generic "everyday" use (not what I'd put my wedding tape, or backup of my tax records, on), I use the Shop4tech whitetop DVD-R.
1. Use the link off of pricewatch. These are $80/500-pack right now.
2. Use 10% off coupon, available many places on the web.
3. Use 3% fatwa**et fatcash.
This brings them down to $69/500 pack -- or $6.90 per 50-pack. Free shipping, too. I've burnt maybe 1500 of these, with negligible problems. Do I expect them to last for a hundred years? Well, no, but as long as they last five or ten years, the market will be well into the lifecycle of the DVD replacement (bluelaser, etc.), with the very, very large holographic formats entering the market.
To preempt the "Taiyo Yuden snobs," I keep a stack of Riteks for "very important" discs, and a stack of Taiyo Yuden for "very, very important" discs. I also make at least one extra backup of the very, very important stuff.
