Cool guys, we're screwing poor foreigners... This feels bad because you see the artist of the item you're buying. And you see the quantity that he has made with his bare hands. But still, i got a rug for 5 dollars.

I just ordered a set of six beer glasses for $39. I'm only paying 6 bucks for shipping. I'm hoping that novica is taking the loss on this one - if any - and not the artists.

It's always been the American way to screw foreigners. Heck they even screw natives.

Very nice crafts! I'll probably order at their full prices when my wife gets a chance to see these. We travelled to South America a few years back just to shop for theses. It's wonderful that Nat Geo is bringing these to us online.

Don't worry, we're not screwing the artists. They get paid by novica per item shipped. Not only, but novica pays them something like 10-50% more than what they'd be getting if they tried to sell the stuff local. Novica cuts out the middle-man and splits the savings between the artist and end-buyer. Win-Win for everyone but the traditional import-export operations which are losing some business.

Most of these artisans are making more money than they ever dreamed (although it doesn't seem like much to most of us), and we are finally able to get our hands on some of this great stuff without wasting a fortune on foreign travel. Isn't free trade great?

dbLA - Seeing that you changed "10 times" to "10-50%", I'm not sure you know what you're talking about. There will always be "middle-persons" unless you purchase from the artists directly. Also, don't underestimate these "artisans". Many have fine arts degrees and hold their own galleries.

Sorry, we did not recognize the code you entered. This field is optional and not required. If you do not have a code, you may leave the field blank. If you have any questions, please email service@novica.com

How elite would it be to drink beer out of hand-crafted Mexican martini glasses ;)

slink, sorry about the typo. You'll notice I fixed it well before you "caught me". By "10 times", I meant gross receipts. After posting, I reviewed my post and realized it could be easily misconstrued, so I changed it to "10 to 50% more" to reflect the payment per item, which does not take into account the increased sales volume. Anyway, if you don't believe me, simply do a literature search (as I did) through third party news accounts and you'll see that what I said is substantially correct. If you are more lazy, the novica site links to several news articles written about them.

Yes, novica is still playing the role of a middleman, at least for much of the transaction, but you have to admit that several other layers of traditional distribution have been eliminated.

Regardless, novica is a classy operation, and still a good deal even without the coupon.

Disclaimer - I did not take advantage of this particular offer.

I just got email confirmation of the order. Anyone else get this and then have their orders cancelled? I'm guessing this was some kind of promo code and not an actual gift certificate. If not, I feel bad for that farmer in the Andes who hand-weaves alpaca sweaters.
