Now I haven't gotten into the big screen TV market quite yet, so I could be wrong, but this seemed like a good deal. 50" HDTV with tuner $1499.99 + free shipping at Buy.com

Link!

Not sure either. I am under the impression that DLP may be the format that will wane in popularity. It is not that it is less 'good' than the others, just that the cost of plasma, even bigger lcd's are coming down. Flat is where it's at. I too want to hang it on the wall!

LG's slogan for 2006 is.."So The World Is Flat After All" (I believe that is right).

The Sony SXRD's are where it's at. Their second-generation units will be out in the next few months and they'll be recieving a substantial price cut. From what I've gotten from my Sony representative, the 60" units will be just under $4k and the 50" units will be around $2k. You want HDTV? SXRD is it.

I have a friend who purchased a Zenith 60" LCD about 2 years ago that looks to be simular in concept to the Sony SXRD. The Zenith was rear projection with a light engine that supposedly could be changed out by the consumer (if he was a bit handy with tools).

Well, the light engine went bad about a week ago, and cost on just the part is over 1400.00. The totally flat bigger LCD's that are coming out now do not have to have a light engine of the same fashion (to my knowledge). No fan to make noise, either.

Also I would check who is making Sony. It is my understanding that a lot of what they have to offer now in HD is from Samsung. Nothing wrong with that on one hand, but it is something many might want to know before they buy.

Check out the new LG plasmas www.lgusa.com. They have a two year P&L warranty, and an direct consumer exchange program for defective sets that is really good.

Yes . I work for an LG/Zenith distributor.

The Sony SXRD is a 3LCD system, similar to that of the JVC HD-ILA. Except, Sony has taken it beyond. I'm a huge fan of LG/Zenith, as we're resellers for them (as well as other brands such as Runco, Fujitsu, Meridian, Lexicon, etc.) but nothing they're currently offering really compares, not even their plasmas.

We have a 55" SXRD in our office as a demo, and once we had it ISF certified, the clarity and video quality is astounding. The Superbowl never looked so good. 🙂

Sure, Zenith's warranty may be a bit longer and/or more comprehensive, but I, personally, am more concerned with quality over warranty.

I'd rather wait for Sony. You may pay more than other brands but you'll be in for years of enjoyments without the headache.
Thus far all of my big screens (dating back from from 4:3 size) have been with Sony's and my cuurent HDTV Sony 65"rptv (2nd gen) in its 4th year and still doing well as far as 1080i/720p picture quality.
I'd even pass up on JVC (ILA or LCOS) sets. I was watching SB at my firend's new 70" JVC (HD-ILA) this past Sunday. After a while I don't know whether it was his set (uncalibrated?) but it seemd to have somewhat ghosting images or something similar in that effect that gave me a mild headache later on, does anyone have any idea why?
Just my $0.02

I recently purchased a Sony 57" HD-Ready rear projection TV for less than $1500.

I would stay away from Magnavox... and RCA. Those are the two brands you'll often see at the bottom of the price barrel, and you get less than you pay for.

magnux ..
The new Sony. Does it have a light engine in the back to excite the pixels? That was what LG/Zenith did with the 60" LCD rear projo (now discontinued). We called it a glorified light bulb. It was at the lower back and the light was directed through a folded path via mirrors to the screen.

Just to clarify ..LG has the better warranty. Zenith is the same as most others.
