Shaheen has a message for all the busy bosses struggling to understand the perpetual stream of software updates and patches, viruses and worms, hackers and identity thieves: You are not alone.

Heh. Our company offers "private" lessons to VP's and above at my company for basic lessons in Word, Excel, etc... $100/hour!

Lucky me. I get to do it for free

The owners where I work have no shame in demonstrating their computer illiteracy and I get to teach them all the time! Not to mention working on their kid's, wive's computers, etc. which aren't even company related.

$50/hour seems really low. If she's training execs, I'd think she'd charge them >$100/hour.

Are you fixing these computers on company time? If so, they are paying you to do it, so no big deal. If its on your time, I would bill them. A few people I work with bring their computers to me, and I usually just charge $100 a job. If it looks like it will take over 2 hours, I let them know that they will be charged for extra time.

Yes, I definitely do it on company time. There is no way I am taking home computers that are not part of the business and working on them for free. The principal is as I stated they are NOT business or company related repairs. They are their own personal use computers. I too charge for repair work and that is essentially taking money from me. I have no issues doing company work on company time since that is what they pay me for. It's irritating that not only do the company owners bring them in from home but my bosses do too.

I think of it like this: If I was an accountant and the boss brought his wife's financial records in for some endeavor she was doing that was entirely unrelated to the company would that be right? It's the same thing.
