i'm shopping for digital slr cameras (under $800, if anyone has suggestions), and as i was browsing minolta's site i came across this.

i think i've just crossed minolta off the list for potential cameras. :disgust:

Pricing for the Minolta DiMAGE 7 Upgrade Kit (including firmware upgrade and DiMAGE Viewer) is $79.95; Firmware upgrade only is $49.95; DiMAGE Viewer only is $49.95.

that price to update hardware you already own?!!? jeebus, if i had one of their products and it didnt function properly without the upgrade and they wanted me to pay, id tell them to go kick rocks and demand it. thats [mike tyson] ludicrious [/mike tyson]

Kinda off the subject, but what exactly is a Digital SLR Camera? What makes it different from any other non-SLR Digital camera?

I read about that on DPreview not long ago. You should have seen the people defending them, it was hilarious:)

i'm assuming they figured if u can afford $800 for a camera, u can chip in $50 for the firmware, its like loaded luxury cars

An SLR is a type of camera that lets you choose the type of lense that you want to use, and therefore can be used for a much wider range of things as well as giving you more control over the picture being taken.

From the sounds of it the upgrade does not address problems, it adds new features/capabilities.

I don't see any problems with it.

Not only that, but when you look through the viewfinder, you see exactly what's coming into the lens, because of a mirror and prism that are in the camera which reflect up what comes in through the lens to the viewfinder. The mirror flips up when you hit the button, so that the picture can be recorded. At least that's the way a regular SLR works.... a digital SLR may not need to flip up the mirror
