If you had the choice between a 50" DLP tv or a 40" LCD tv, which would you choose? Both are the same brand, same price, display 1080p, HDMI connections, etc. What would you buy and why?

Background:

Roomate and I are looking to get an HDTV for our apartment. We've basically narrowed it down to these two, but I thought I'd ask the minds of the forums for their input. The TV will be used mainly for watching sports & hd-dvd movies, and playing xbox 360.

*edit* for those asking about viewing distance, right now it'd be about 10ft but we could move the couch closer to accommodate.

I personally hate DLP sets and would rather have a smaller LCD, but that's just me. Look at them both and if you like the picture of the DLP then get that.

Depends how important viewing angles are to you and how bright the room is. But generally...I would take the DLP

What will the average viewing distance be?

I'd lean towards LCD (even though my family has a DLP which we love) because of the bulb factor. Sure a bulb lasts a long time, but with an LCD I would personally not care nearly as much about turning it on and off a bunch of times throughout the day or leaving it on for long periods.

This is the most important question. If I were 8 feet or closer to the screen, I'd definitely choose the LCD. If I were 10+ feet from the screen, I'd definitely take the DLP. At 8-10 feet, I'm not sure what I would do.

I voted other, because personally I would (and am) save up for a 50" plasma to be viewed from 10 feet.

I haven't seen the apartment we're moving into yet, but my roommate estimated that right now it'd be around 10 ft, but that things could be moved around to accommodate either tv.

Another thing to consider is viewing angles. If you (or anyone else) will be viewing the TV from the side, the LCD will look MUCH better. If this is the case, then I recommend viewing a DLP from the side at a store.

If you can adjust the seating, then I would get the 40" LCD and sit 6-7 feet from it.

At 10 feet you should go with a 55 or larger. Preferably a 65" in all seriousness.

Size really does matter with HD, so get the biggest you can.
