I'm moving in July and want to pick up another TV for the house's lower level. Currently I've got a Vizio E370VA (1080P 37") and love it. However, I want something bigger for the basement. I've been looking at plasma options from Samsung and LG.

Samsung:

LG:

These sets represent a LOT of screen real estate for the $$$, and both have great reviews. The question is, how much of a difference will I notice at 9-10ft viewing distance between 720P and 1080P on a screen this big?

If not these, does anyone have any recommendations at the $600-700 price point? I don't need 3D or internet connectivity. Sound quality is a moot point as it will be running through a 5.1 receiver.

I would just shell out another $200 for the 1080p variants, but I'd rather put that money toward a better receiver and center channel speaker.

It's not going to be THX or anything, but a 9-10' viewing distance is normal and most don't have 50" TV's even.

If you have a Costco near you, you may want to see if they have any LG 50PV400 sets. This is a 50" 1080p plasma. I got one last Fall for $750 and I see that at my local Costco (in Portland, OR), they are discounting it down to $650. The set has zero anti-glare treatment (like most LG sets as far as I know) so it will act like mirror if you are in a really bright room. But the picture quality is awesome. It's a basic set, so no 3D or internet (which you say you aren't interested in anyway). Only two HDMI inputs, which is a bit restrictive unless you have an AVR that you use as an HDMI switch.

Thanks for the tip. We actually have a Costco opening here in town in June. It will have an indoor parking lot. :awe:

o_O zomg indoor parking lot?
the only costco i've seen have that was in taiwan

also our living room is set up with a 50" 720p panasonic, with viewing distance of ~8-10 ft
that resolution and distance is still great for blurays was watching Band of Brothers on Bluray <3 from the amazon uk deal

the only time the lower 720p resolution is noticeable is when my notebook's hooked up when reading text and such
