I needed to caulk 5 average size windows, and I was curious how many tubes of caulk it should of took. The installer didn't do the side edges just the top n bottom.

EDIT: I thought he was going to caulk the full window, not just the top and bottom. He asked me to pick up 5 tubes of quad caulk which I did. So he used 5 tubes, on 5 windows, of only a 36" width by 2, or a total of 6' per window.

he is doing the sides. but yes, still an over est. i would think. better to have a bit too much than to be making another run in the middle of a project i think.

Did you ask him why he didn't caulk the whole window? Seems like that is part of the install. I have never in my life heard of a window installer only caulking half the window...

...and if you have never handled caulk before, I'd let a professional do it.

That's why I'm asking how many should of been used for a full window. I wasn't there, I was at work at the time, and all I did was just pick up the quad caulk. I could probably finish the job. I just didn't have the brake to bend the material. Thing is, I don't know how much of my materials he used on my cousins job. My cousin set the whole thing up. I let my cousin use some of the textured capping material to finish an Aunt's window but when they picked up the material from my house to go do my Aunt's job, I don't know if they also used the caulking too, cause i never agreed on buying caulking for her window.

I've never heard of half a window being done too. Some of the explanations were about looks of it being caulked on the sides not Looking good. Another explanation was about the window already being sealed previously. ???

Won't water get on the inside? Although the sides are very very close to the brick and look nice and neat but being insulated is part of my concern.

When I do roof repairs I can usually get 20' out of a tube on average doing the flashing. For windows I would expect to get even more coverage out of a tube. At the most he should of only used two tubes.
If you finish the sides just use a small hole in the tube and use a wet finger to smooth it out.
Quad caulking is very very sticky and doesn't spread as easily as others, but it works great.
Also if it is cold outside make sure the tube is in the house getting warm before you start.

<obligatory big black caulk comment>

Clearly you need to beat your installer over the head with something heavy.
