Can anyone explain what is the difference between having a car with 5 speed automatic transmission and 4 speed automatic transmission and what is advantage if any of having 5 speed auto?
 
Having a wider selection of gear ratios allow the engine to more efficiently and effectively transfer the engines power to the driveline, internal combustion engines develop their power in a specific RPM range, having a wider selection of gear ratios allows this powerband to be used in a more efficiant manner.

1st gear ratios can be lower for better off the line acceleration, the ratios can be grouped closer together and a high ratio can be utilized for fifth gear for lower RPM operation on the highway which decreases fuel consumption and engine wear.
