why?

Because there are no articles that say "buyers are flocking new auction sites"

the only other respectable alternative at this point with traffic is Amazon.

A few niche sites (gunbroker being one) are doing ok.

I highly doubt it. This is about a seller who decided to pursue her own biz in her own website.

As for buyers, there are billions who love to browse hassle free from millions of vendors auctioning billions of items, all under one universal standardized site.

I may agree Ebay sucks nowadays, but that's for us tech geeks who know better. We make up of fractions compared to billions of casual ebay buyers out there.

I don't see how it's a "success" story. The Bid website, sure. The lady selling $1500 a month? She makes a living off that?

So basically, 3 of the 5 sellers grew their business on eBay to the point where it made more sense for them to run their own websites.

This is really picking up steam. I just read this on a popular deals site, and with 208 responses and 13,424 views and only having been posted today @ 02:44 PM, I think the word is spreading quite well.

Ebay boycott Feb 18th- 25th

I want to pass this information on to the members here.

People are trying to organize a boycott of eBay for the week of February 18th through the 25th. This means no buying, selling, or searching.

Why?

Ebay is planning on increasing fees across the board and destroying the current feedback system for sellers.

Paypal is also planning changes that will allow them to hold on to your money, interest free, for 21 days.

Don't like these changes? What can you do?

First watch this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23TomS5--nQ

Then read the discussion on the official ebay boards to see what you can do including cancelling your paypal account and getting helpful phone numbers and email addresses.
http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thr...nticache=1202412195663

The true problem is that buyers will stay because they will not feel the effect of price increases. With no buyer feedback you can technically go on, bid/order things, and never pay for them. As a buyer I can buy things and request a refund with no reprecussions (sp?).

The sellers will be getting screwed and the sellers are the ones that will need to find somewhere else to go.

So you say there is no where else to go? Try these:

Ecrater (our best option and darn near free)
http://www.ecrater.com/

Amazon (Amazon is a great price and only gets busier every year)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/selle...r=07BJS1HQPB2SG15KF9GA

Bidville:
http://www.bidville.com

Want to know how these sites are faring? Here is a great site.

http://www.powersellersunite.com/auctionsitewatch.php

So, I know that is a lot of information. We must fight these changes or soon eBay will not exist. If you are a small time seller, take a week off. If you have a store, go on "vacation" for the week.

Lets see what we can do!

^^

so basically, there will be a ton of sellers "boycotting" ebay for a week. So supply = down, demand = same, price = up?

Seriously, buyers don't give a shit about these changes (as evidenced in my poll prior). Boycotting eBay (as a seller) is about as effective as boycotting a gas station for a day

re: what are the other auction sites

I've used gunbroker and overstock in the past. Overstock put a shitload of money into advertising the year before last. We got like a .000001% sell ratio. F'n retarded. I've looked at a few other auction sites, and the stories are the same. Ton's of disgruntled sellers, no buyers.

The smart sellers will do this

Sell though ALL channels that they can. Get repeat customers. Drive repeat customers to own website. Repeat, repeat, repeat. eBay is becoming less of a 'primary' channel, and more effective at unloading things you can't sell at full retail. Use that to drive sales back to your primary site.

I, for one, don't care about the changes (except the feedback one). The net effect of the fee increases on me will = about zero. I want buyers, so the less sellers there are the better it is for me :)

I really enjoyed ebay when it first started.
It was the average joe putting up stuff for sale , about like going to yard sales.

Then they added all the businesses and now there is more junk on there that I don't want .
I get tired of sorting through all the crap.
If I wanted to go retail I wouldn't be looking on ebay.

Sadly there isn't much of an alternative.

I think they will survive for now.

They have like..6 or 7 sellers, so 5 isn't all of them.

buyers come and go, reliable sellers are what makes/breaks ebay

how are you going to gauge reliability if the rating system is one-sided?

Ebay sucks because people pay too much for used stuff on there. It's a good source for stuff that is no longer being produced though.

It is yet further evidence of the growing trend of stupid people getting into markets they shouldn't be in. My point being, as is happening in many markets (housing market anyone?), people who really don't know the value of the commodity in the market are driving the price up by overvaluing it (both buyers and sellers), and coupling that with the increased demand, you get skyrocketing prices.

What eBay was built on has now become basically just software for doing an online store front. I think people are paying too much for that type of service (they're paying a percentage fee of everything they sell instead of a flat fee like you would for say a website or store front), and so it leaves them with no money to be able to actually back the goods they sell (many cases of buying a product on eBay and the manufacturer will not warrant it for example). These sellers leaving is basically them just finally realizing that they should be setting up their own operation, as they're not doing anything to lower their overhead by sticking with eBay (in fact, I'd say there's a good possibility that by sticking with eBay they might be raising their overhead costs the more things they sell).

You could certainly argue that its just market economics at work, however in this strange market you get people paying still higher prices even after supply goes up. Now it seems like the sellers would then be raking in money, but due to the high level of competition and overhead, not to mention no real control over supply they actually aren't.

I feel that forums have taken over as the small, sell your own stuff places as they offer less fees and a better environment and in many cases a much more focused target audience (for instance, sell headphone stuff on Head-Fi and you'll either be able to sell it much easier and/or get a higher price for it).

I hate bargainland too. Their idea is cool. Its great business model for auction sites. But that company is run by a bunch of inbred idiots who don't know a damn thing about running a business. It seems like they basically fell into a good idea and are making a lot of money off of it now, despite all of their employees' mental deficiencies

not sure why ebay would raise prices...they were pretty steep before...add ebay fees + paypal fees, you might as well sell it at a pawn shop and not deal with the internet hassle.

Wow.

I was preaching Amazon stores and how they are a pretty good business model. Well fuck, I just found out that there is no inherent way to build in sales tax to instate sales. So I gotta run a report every month, figure out what sales were instate, and deduct sales tax from those sales.

WHAT THE FUCK amazon, how many lines of code could that be?
