QueBert, imho, gps on the EVO is the best I've experienced on a phone, what Rom are you using?

Right now Warm Z Twopointtwo, which give me the best battery life by far out of the 10 or so roms I've tried. Since my GPS drains the battery faster than it charges I'm going to have to disagree with your statement though :D

I meant "shortest" way, obviously. This option is useful during rush hour when you are you around a city with lots of congested areas. It will take you to your destination by local zig zag much faster. If you can select "avoid tolls, avoid highway, avoid traffic", that accomplishes the same thing, but the Google Navigation I used certainly wasn't able to do such complicated routing.

Highway only is preferable if you want to go a LONGER way (via MORE highway), but is FASTER because you drive faster on the highway than a local way.

You can't manually change any route either.

Do I have to spell everything out?

alternate-routes.jpg

Google Support for Navigation said:
From the Route Info screen, press the Alternate Routes button to receive alternate options for your trip. If no better options exist, you'll receive a "No Routes Found" message.

If this button is grayed out, this is an indication that no alternate routes are available at the present time.

GPS on my EVO sucks sacks, if my phone's 100% charged when I get into my car, and I hook it directly to my car charger the GPS will kill the battery faster than the charger can charge it. So if I needed the GPS to be constantly on for a long trip I'd be SOL. I dunno if the iPhone has this problem too, but I know my clunky ass Magellan doesn't

therefore stand alone GPS >>> phone GPS

Don't use crappy cheap car chargers?

I have the HTC car charger, I suppose it's possible that HTC make a crappy charger for their own phone. I honestly don't know if the charger being crappy's the problem, but it definitely wasn't cheap. Hummm... maybe I need a high output alternator and a Optimum red top battery in my car to keep my phone from dying?

Build quality iphones look nice, but front/back being glass, and antennagate? really?
Screen quality yea, they got nice screens, but Super Amoled? qHD screens? this whole idea of "retina displays" really means nothing because people dont look for the individual pixels anyways. its a selling point
Battery life lol? none replaceable battery? besides battery life on androids vary and still are better than iphone on higher end devices
Lag quality no lag at all on my Droid x. still, higher end has no problem
App quality meh, that is debateable, depends exactly what you use the phone for. Utilities, they are the same. the only thing id say is better are the variety of quality games, but i dont play enough to the point i care.

OS basics (like on screen keyboard - insanely inferior on Android) lol iOS5 notification system = android at launch.
copy/paste has been here since launch
widgets?
customization (different launchers)
oh really? having the option to pick from plenty of different keyboards
. when websites like http://forums.anandtech.com/www.damnyouautocorrect.comhttp://damnyouautocorrect.com/ have like 12 iphone pictures to every android, im pretty sure we can guess which keyboard is better

There is no reason to buy an Android phone over an iPhone like there is no reason to buy a Kia Rio over a Lexus - other than money.

Actually when iOS 5.0 arrives, Android will have no advantages whatsoever.

clearly you like to overlook plenty of factors

pretty entertining

i will ask 1 thing. how often do you use GPS? seriously ive had my phone for 2 years and in the time ive put almost 40K miles on my car and ive used my GPS 1 fucking time and it worked fine

also teh car charger thing with the evo, not sure on what its output is but i havent seen a car charger yet that doesnt suck ass. mine takes forever to charge my droid. and running GPS+streaming music i can use the battery just as fast as its charging.

a AC-DC converter + normal charger works better and/or cars that actually have a AC plug in them

charging off a USB port is even worse,

I think I might know why quebert can't keep topped off on a car charger but I can...

I use one of these + normal usb cable
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/car-cig...e-dc-12v-40469

and they're 1A instead of .5, that's probably why

QB, pick up a couple, at $2 shipped each they're cheap as shit if you have a couple uUSB cables, and charge better

You're apple fanboy shtick is getting pretty old. It it entertaining that your keep trying though....

It's funny as hell that the GPS app he rants and raves about is on Android too... just noone uses it. He just pretends it is apple only or that it is iphone specific. He fails to address how something free does 90% of what it does and is more than adequate for most of us.

I use both on Android (I sometimes drive across Europe and the roaming charges would kill me with and online only GPS) and I'd say that Google navigate is as good as the paid apps.

Its routing engine is really good and the maps are up to date. Its fantastic if you dont have an address of the place you are looking for, also if your looking for a type of business/place i.e. a garage or pharmacy.

Its voice engine is a bit crappy and the map is a bit bland (the route blends into the map too much). It also needs better turn indicators at roundabouts.

So yeah they both have their advantages, but Google Nav is in no way inferior to the paid ones unless you have a specific need.

I live in NYC (Manhattan) and on average I use my phones GPS at least twice a week on drives upstate or to other boroughs. Prior to that I would print out maps from mapquest or googlemaps but reading directions sucks and the turn by turn voice on my phone (Samsung Vibrant, GPS issue was fixed) is great, and free. Even on my Asus Transformer its great (even better than the vibrant, but thats obvious) and free and "It just works" .

Google Nav was one of the major things that I missed when I switched to an iPhone a while back. I tried some of the paid GPS apps (one of my friends had the Navigon), but I didn't think they were worth the cost at all. Ended up just using Mapquest's free app for the voice navigation, but I like Google Nav the most.

Android gives you choice in hardware, and much greater software customization (seriously Apple, the grid icon layout is stone age stuff compared to what else is out there) and that's pretty important to me. The iPhone is a nice phone, but it's just one phone, so you're stuck with whatever Apple deems is good enough for their one and only model.

You would use your brain, which theoretically is faster at routing and getting somewhere without needing to pay attention to a voice.

Key word, theoretically, in your case.
Bullsh!t. Your brain only routes through areas you already know.

You could also pay $80 for a far superior REAL GPS application on an iPHone. One that gives you options for routing, avoidance, histories etc.

Or... you could get a phone that already has all that included, instead of making up excuses for your lame fruit phone.

None as good as the $80 one (Navigon MobileNavigator), because you buy it once and that's that (also good on an iPad if you want to really "navigate").

Oh, and it also doesn't require a constant data connection like Google Navigation. Lose your data coverage, you have no GPS.

I have Navigon on my iPhone and paid $35 for it (full US version).

to really navigate you need an ipad huh? guess that means you can't "really" navigate with your itoy where i can with my android phone

seriously, i know some people who are apple fans and own every product but they don't come across anywhere near as voracious a fan as you. and i mean fan as in it's real meaning - fanatic!

LOL, the Nav apps on iPads are a hoot, too bad you have to buy the 3G models to get the GPS chip.

I love using my 10" GPS unit :D

BTW, the deal with the 'charging and dieing in the car' is down to the charger. I have a convenient retractable one and it struggles to keep up with my droid, but will maintain level with gps and any other streaming(phone neither gains nor loses battery charge). However when I was on a roadtrip with a friend last year he had a different charger and it worked significantly better.

Yeah, if you get a decent one it should have the same output as your mains charger. That's why I was curious about the output of QB's one.

Even with a 1000mA charger if I'm playing Plants Vs Zombie while using Bluetooth headphones I can kill a fully charged battery if I played long enough. This is with the screen @ 70% brightness, and wifi/3g/4g disabled. God bless HTC they have developed world class battery draining technology. lol

Maybe it's an HTC problem then, I've yet to see a phone from them with decent battery life (stock that is).

Hmmm, that doesn't sound right. On my daily drive into work I usually have google maps, pandora, 4g, bluetooth stream, GPS and screen 100% bright and its always 100% when I pull into the garage.

That's my experience as well but I only have an HTC Desire so it's not really comparable.
