Microcenter has a cheap switch for sale at $34.99 with a $25 rebate.

Gigafast EZ500-S 10/100 Switch
$25 Rebate

I wouldn't read too much into it, sounds like alot of marketing terms are thrown into this switch to make it sound appealing. Nothing more than a cheap 5 port switch though which for some is more than enough at $10.

PC Club also has a tiny, cute 5-port switch
for about $10 after a $10 MIR.

I have used a couple of them for a few months
and have not had any trouble.

I mention bcs. investement is much smaller.

this is a nice switch - got one a few years back at microcenter for $12 after rebate.

very small, nice LED setup, and best of all - it will autodetect if a port needs to be uplink or not. on each and every port. no crazy switches to flip or anything

this is a great little switch...auto detects uplinking (connect to router with normal cable, not crossover), or regular mode. its also tiny, i think this is a great deal...however, i hate the rebate company..infact, here's what happened...i bought an item 1AM my time, i think newegg's receipt said the previous date (their servers are in cali!) so here's rebate status:

Product: GIGAFAST 5-PORT 10/100MBPS PALM-SIZE SWITCH REBATE
Retailer: NEW EGG.COM
Purchase Date: Sunday, June 30, 2002
Rebate Amount: $0.00
Type: Cash Rebate
Status: Rebate Submission is Denied
Reason Rejected: ORIGINAL PURCHASE NOT DURING REBATE PERIOD\PCHSED 06/30/02--VALID DATES: 07/01/02-07/24/02

They wouldn't do anything about it, and I hold a grudge :)

Nice switch if you like packet collisions and you like to create major bottlenecks in your network :D

More specs and pictures here...

Is the microcenter one blue or beige? Just curious... sometimes the pictures aren't accurate.

BTW, the auto-uplink feature is a godsend. I have it on all of my switches at home now (none, incidentally, are this switch, but I do have another gigafast one which works fine).

I didn't see the feature of auto-uplink detection so this is a pretty decent switch for the money.

Enjoy

Shipping was $5.99 and was charged too. Not bad for ~ $16 after rebate...and microcenter rebates always come.

Looks like a goo deal to me!

Could I buy this and connect it to my D-Link DI-704P and add more machines to my router? In other words is it physically possible and if so will the router hand out more IP's past the 4 ports it currently manages??

I know this is hot deals forum but the timing was right for me to ask...

As you were people.

A hub is like sticking your head out the window with a megaphone and shouting "HEY, BOB!". In other words, it broadcasts data transmissions to every computer connected to the network and waits for the correct one to pick up the packets.

A switch is like picking up the phone and calling Bob. Meaning, it intelligently manages data packets and sends them to individual computers on the network, wherever the packets indicate they're supposed to be going.

Yes, your router can handle around 250 or so connections

Excellent - that naswers half the question, the other half is this .. how do I connect a switch to the router? Crossover cable or standard ethernet?

This switch makes it so you can use standard ethernet cables for any connection you'd need, if I understand correctly. I'm pretty sure uplink ports are crossed over?

Plugging a crossover cable into a standard port is the same thing as using a standard cable and a crossover port-all it does is flip 2 pairs of wires. Auto-uplinking means that either cable will work, whether you are hooking to a computer or uplinking.

It's a $10AR, unmanaged, 5-port 10/100 switch.
