Hmm...4 speakers and a sub...They call that dobly digital? Nevermind...they call it

<< DIGITAL audio >>

. Oh wait...nevermind, they did claim it

<< Dolby Digital >>

. Anyways, if the center speaker isn't too important to you, this ain't bad.

Sorry if I am slightly off topic, but after all I am a junior member. :) Anyways, how can companies like Altec Lansing get away with labelling their merchandise as Dolby Digital? To my best understanding, Dolby Digital is 5.1 channel surround sound. Meaning we have a center channel, a front left channel, a front right channel, a left rear channel, and a right rear channel, which can all work independently of each other. Then we have the .1 channel which is the subwoofer that only plays the low frequencies. Anyways maybe I'm wrong :)

Well if you are going to buy these then I suggest going over to overstock.com and get the ada885's for 20 bucks more. Has 120watts compared to 80 I believe, and at overstock you can get free shipping on the product which is really good since it weighs about 36lbs. They have it priced for 161 but you can use the 20 off a purcahse of 50 or more to bring it down to 141... Pretty sweet deal, I just got one and I am really impressed with the subwoofer

i suppose i'll handle the junior member's question ;-)

"Analog Input Sensitivity: 300mV for full output, Digital Input: S/PDIF"

notice, it says input.

and as long as dolby does not complain, altec lansing can say anything.

there is a decoder built in, the only thing it does not have is a real center speaker, it does virtual center with the front speakers (which is okay, not great).

I received my set of ADA885 from Overstock.com on Wednesday. They sound really nice even without a center speaker. Unfortunately my subwoofer dies after about an hour of being plugged in even without any use. If I unplug it and let it cool off it works fine again. The bottom of the box gets so hot that I'm afraid it's going to melt the plastic or something. Anybody ever exchange something at Overstock.com, or should I just contact Altec Lansing?

Shipping to Seattle is $13, which is reasonable. Even without a true center channel speaker, I bet this setup blows away my Pro Logic system which doesn't have a sub-woofer. In my case I would probably still have sound going to my TV set, which would be kind of like a center channel. When you look at the price of separate amplifiers and speakers, $119 starts looking pretty darn good for the entire setup, including remote.

yo dayooper, I just orded myself one too (ada885).

I went to techbargains and click on the link for new customer and got the speakers for $141.

I hope nothing goes wrong with these speaker since there refribrish, anyway it comes with 1 year warranty.

Right now I have a cheap pair of $10 speaker with my Vortex 2 sound card.

I want to inform the misinformed.

If you are hoping that this product (ADA880/880R/885 Altec Lansing speakers) are Dolby Digital 5.1, you are sadly mistaken.

This product info page describes the system in somewhat misleading terms. It is a 4-piece + subwoofer system, and the idea is that the center channel is downmixed into the left and right front channels. But I do not believe it decodes 5.1.

Take a look at the logos on the page. "True Digital Audio" and "Pro Logic" are listed. No 5.1!

I believe the Dolby "certifications," if you will, are as follows:
Dolby Surround
Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital 5.1

So if you want 5 discrete channels, this isn't the system for you.

DaYooper,

I ordered my ADA885 from Overstock.com 2 weeks ago and the bass was really weak, and from this forum I found out that I wasn't the only one who experienced this problem. So I called overstock.com and they said that the quickest way to exchange is to make another order while you return your first unit. Since I wasn't the only one who had problem with the bass, I decided to just return the darn thing. To avoid restocking fee, you must contact them in 5 days after you receive your ADA885 and explain them your situation. Then they'll send you the RMA# and prepaid UPS airbill.

I also contacted Altect Lansing, but the tech guy told me it'll take at least 3 weeks before I can get my speakers back, and that's way too long. So I didn't even bother there.

Bottomline is I do not recommend people buying the refurbished ADA885 for whatever cheap price there is.

Mikey

If you read carefully. The original deal is for the AL ADA880's, and not the 885's at Overstock. I, and quite a few others on here have refurbed 880's, and haven't had a problem. So obviously you only need to stay away from the 885's, and NOT the 880's at Compgeeks.

I would also like to add that these speakers (ADA880) kick arse, and you'll be hard pressed to find a set this nice for such a small price. These are a Hot Deal IMO.

I haven't heard them in a real setup. In other words, not at Best Buy. :)

However I'd say these are nicer, unless you really want true 4 way sound, because these only have one input, although they do have a digital in that will work with a Live, but you'll need an adapter.

I'm gonna eventually use these for my 2nd rig (need a Live first), and buy a set like the 2000's for my main/gaming rig w/ my MX300. So I can have true 3-D sound for games.

I came across this deal at Compgeeks, and was ready to post it. But as any good member would do, I searched first. ;)

Anyway, these ADA-880's are new (not refurbished.) And for those who cry that they are crap... What's a better setup for ~$130 (including shipping)?

(One of the things that annoy me... People who b*tch, but offer no better suggestion.)

How do these speakers compare to the Yamaha YSTMS55DW. I Just purchased these from Onvia.com for 103.23. I've heard the Yamahas before and it puts out clean bass. How are the Altec Lansings? What would you guys recommend?

As I understand, these speakers do decode dolby digital 5.1, and create a phantom center channel using the front two speakers. So they do not offer 5.1 discrete channels, but they will decode a 5.1 signal, which is why they can call they can call it a dolby digital surround system. Also, for those of you who have had bass problems with the ADA885, if you are using them in quad mode with a soundblaster live, there is a download available on dell's site that will fix it. here's the link: http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R20590

i found the ada880 for $109 at gogocity.com
add about $20.00 for shipping.

overstock also has the same speakers for $159.
i added a $20 off coupon + $15 off coupon + free
magazine subscripition.

this comes out to be $124 with a free mag subscription
and free shipping!

to get the coupons.. go to techbargains and add a $20
and a $15 off. try a few different combinations if it
says that your email address is already on file.
