we have heard from one of our close source that Palm is working on a smartphone that will have a display slightly bigger than 5″. While we have been unable to confirm if this is indeed the rumored Mansion, the chances for this are pretty bright taking the possible launch date into consideration. Our source has confirmed that the launch shall happen in three months time. That’s towards the end of Q1 2011.

Go go Web OS...

5" isn't that pocketable. The Steak is 5" and can only fit in larger pockets. That's more tablet-ish.

To big for me. My EVO works very well. A 4.5" with a thinner bezel would work and I could live with a 4.0". I can't see myself ever going back to something smaller than 4".

What ROM are you using?

I keep going back to Cyanogen because of the better battery life..

Currently on Virus Airborne. Ran Fresh for a long time and Cyanogen for a while. I really like the looks of Virus. I stream 24/7 it seems so my battery always takes a beating, luckily I work out of a car so it's not a big deal most of the time.

A 5" screen with minimal bezel would be only a little bigger than the Evo I now have and I have no problem with that.

Going forward there will be the smaller is better crowd with phones that are pretty useless for anything but making phone calls and simple texting. There will be mid-sized phones going up to, about 4" screens, and there will be larger phones with some beyond 5 inches.

With a larger phone of, say 5 inch screen and high resolution you can do most of the things a laptop can do -- but it will be larger than some will tolerate. The mid-sized phones, with a hotspot feature, would allow you to carry a more practical sized phone and so long as you also have a netbook/laptop/tablet you can do most anything you want.

For me, I'm waiting for a phone of about 5 inch screen with 1920 x 1200 resolution. Multi-core with 2GB+ RAM and 256GB storage would also be sweet and before long the norm. The biggest issue I have with the current smart phones is the limited "selection" capabilities and not just text selection. I would LOVE to be able to open an AutoCAD drawing and do some minor editing and pull dimensions on my phone. I think you need something better to select entities than what's out there right now.

Have been using VA for a day now, I like it too, although I wish Cyanogen had 4G

We're several years away from smartphones replacing netbooks and several years on top of that replacing notebooks. Also even if there was a high res 5" screen phone, you wouldn't be able to navigate it as easily compared to a laptop.

Electronic devices aren't all about how powerful they can become, its also about how you can physically use the device. A smartphone can have a Core i7 in it but still wouldn't be able to do as much as a laptop and still wouldn't replace a laptop.

To me, a 5" phone wouldn't be that much different from a 3.5", 4" unless it has higher resolution than 800x480.
I used to be in ove with he HD2 and its 4.3" screen but to be honest, the IP4 with the smaller screen 3.5" but higher resolution is just as effective and its smaller to carry around.
Somebody need to up te standard resolution of 800x480.
I would easily choose the Galaxy and its 4" screen over the all the others 4.3" screen.
Not only because of the S-amoled but its phone are much lighter and thinner.

A 5" screen with a 1920x1200 rez??? LOL

The iP4 has a DPI that's not much less than a 5 inch at 1920 x 1200. It makes no sense upping the screen size but maintaining the same lower resolution. Going with a 1920 x 1200 would be a good match for HDTV and with smart phones becoming video/TV appliances it's only a matter of time before they're fully HDTV in all ways.

LOL at ya!

I'd be fine with a 720p 4.3" or 1080p 5" lcd phone if it were 300dpi. That kind of screen would be amazing.

No I don't suggest a phone will fully replace a laptop and made that clear when I said I'd like to be able to do "LIMITED" editing of an AutoCAD drawing on my phone. The UI for a phone will not be as easy to use as a laptop with KB and mouse so knocking out a 1000 entity drawing on the phone would be impractical, but making a few 'in the field' edits would not be impractical IF the phone had a large enough screen with high resolution AND there was a better selection mechanism.

But yes, I am talking a few years down the road but probably only a few. Driving a 1920 x 1200 screen will take more CPU power and memory than the current phones but then we will have multi-core CPU's and more memory by then. If there's anything I've learned in nearly 30 years in the semi-conductor business is that devices will continue to get more powerful and people will always say we don't need more than we have now.

If progress stopped because the industry believed we are as powerful as we need to be then we'd still be riding horses and calculating with our fingers!

Well, 1920x1080 is not happenning anytime soon.
I'm just hoping for 1280x720 for right now.

I suspect there will be a step or two before we get to 1920 x 1200 and I did say it would likely be a few years. The iP4 is not far from 1280 x 720 already and it is on a phone with a 3.5 inch screen. Before the iP4 came out the same group of folks would have LOL if someone told them a phone would come out with a 960 x 640 display.

As I said in my prior, the two constants in the semi-conductor industry are: they will double performance every couple/few years AND there will be those that laugh at the idea that further development is needed! It should be obvious that those that laugh are ALWAYS wrong!
