These things are a pain to put up. I don't want to imagine what it takes to put up a regular (non-5-minute) ceiling fan. We put one in the living room about 6 months ago, and it took about 2 hours. We just put another in the master bedroom last night and it took about 2-3 hours.

I don't think I've ever seen a "5 minute" install claim on a ceiling fan. Maybe a light kit for one. But not the fan itself.

If the box is already there, is suitable for a fan, and the wiring is already run, I can see installing one in 5 minutes.

...but that's like saying you can build a PC w/ a complete Windows install in 10 minutes if the HD has the OS already setup and all the drivers installed.

I purchased one of those 5 minute ceiling fans, and that's about how long it took, excluding going out to the barn to get the step ladder. Seriously, it's 2 screws, and 3 or 4 wirenuts. (And everything else just sort of snaps together.) While 5 minutes might be a bit of an exaggeration, I'm certain I was done in well under 10 minutes. I hate the fan though, or rather, the light kit. It uses those pita tiny socket bulbs. They burn out all the time & it's a pain to reach them to replace them. But, I did enjoy attaching the fan blades - why did it take so long for someone to invent that?! That used to be one of the worst parts unless you got lucky & never dropped one of the screws.

But... 2-3 hours? Ouch!

Oh, but the absolute MOST fun is putting up a ceiling fan where there's no box and no electricity...just a blank ceiling and a wall socket about 20 feet away AND the ceiling is solid concrete.

Hammer drill mounting holes for box
Mount box
Mount fan motor to box
Run wire (with cable clips as you go) from outlet two switch box on wall up wall, across ceiling to fan

Oh yeah...that's fun. /slitwrist

Yeh, that's the big friggin "*" at the bottom of the box. I put two new ceiling fans in our homes in completely virgin ceilings. That was a good 2 hours per fan.

When I worked as a handyman we made a killing off installing fans. With a little practice, even a regular one takes less than 30 minutes if there is already an electrical box rated for hanging a fan in place.

Took me less than an hour to climb into the attic, coordinate with people below to find a mounting position, drill the hole, run the wiring, mount the ceiling brace in the attic, climb down and mount the fan, connect power, and flip the switch. Less than an hour.

Where did you run the wire from? Was it a prewired box in the ceiling?

Yes, ran it from an existing junction box. I'd already measured distance and purchased a new junction box and tubing to run from the existing box. Just had to cut about a foot off the tubing and was ready to go.

OP: You're doing it wrong.

You're confusing sex with installing ceiling fans. Ceiling fans should take 5 minutes...sex 2 to 3 hours.

You're definitely doing something wrong. A regular ceiling fan shouldn't take more than an hour. Two if you have to mount and wire up a new box.
