What are we telling the young?

What we're telling them is that we can admire and respect somebody's talent while at the same time be angered and saddened by their addiction fueled behaviors.

The newest pics of her, while she's still emaciated are hopeful, she actually looks happy, hopefully she'll continue with treatment.

If we were being angered and saddened by their addiction fueled behavior then we would seek to punish them in some sort of way or at least show them that they won't be rewarded if they keep acting inappropriately.

I think Britney Spears' album was actually way better than Amy Winehouse's album "pop" wise. And, Britney wasn't even nominated (i don't think). She sold a ton of records too.

Amy accepted her grammy's.... in London.. she got her Visa but too late to make it over here in time to accept.. she's been let know that her antics aren't approved of.

If she hopes to cross over and make it big here she'd better get clean and stay that way.

I'm sorry but I have empathy for people ..I don't believe that anybody intentially sets out to ruin their lives and destroy their families via addiction, treatment works and I hope Amy sticks with it.Too many dead young people from this crap.

Last I had heard the US denied her Visa. Opps looks like the denied her on the 7th and then gave her one on the 9th. She could have made it to the US.

She gets a visa even though she doesn't use it, try that as a joe nobody on drugs.

We want to hang Roger Clemens for drugs

We send our top female track star Marion Jones to jail for lying about drug use.

Get caught with a joint in your car during a police stop go to jail

Get caught with drugs during a test on the high school football team goodbye team and hopes of getting into college football

Get caught during a surprise test during work goodbye job

Etc. etc

Have a youtube video of you smoking crack, tell the world off in one of your songs about rehab and you get five grammies.

Something just isn't right here.

She got that Visa only when it was too late for her to make use of it... the message from that is pretty clear imho.

At any rate,we've lost too many talented young people to drugs,I just hope she gets into a strong recovery and I'd feel that way if it were any one of you guys or one of your relatives.

That is my own opinion of course.

Her "issues" are what make her who she is. Most great art comes from suffering. Remove the suffering, and you remove the art.........

She wasn't even allowed into our country because of her drug addiction (at first) ...that's just sad. Either way, it just comes down to my opinion of her and her music and I really don't think she deserved all five of those grammys.

That's just absurd. Not all great music comes from suffering. There are plenty of artists who made/make great music based on positive things that have happened in their life.

The problem with this artist is that I think the media is just waiting for her to OD so that she can become some dumb icon like all the others... That is what the media does...and we shouldnt feed into that.

Yes she needs to straighten up her life, but when do you EVER see any of these celeb people get their act together? and with all the attention these days for her there is no way the party is going to slow down now..

it's disgusting. There are other less known, better talents out there.

Well,I just really like her voice and there's something very sad about our ability to literally watch somebody self-destruct
on national tv.I hope she continues to get treatment.

You are a good person Geekbabe, I wasn't trying to thread crap or anything. Obviously this was just made for you to congratulate someone you thought was talented. I wanted Kanye to win all his awards and he did win a bunch and I'm sure people would've ate me alive for giving him props :p

She pulled cocain out of her hair, on stage during one of her shows, and snorted it right there on stage. Which was also on Youtube.

And about her Visa, she was denied it originally because of her drug use. The exact quote was that it was denied because of "use and abuse of narcotics,"

And if you google news about her this morning, you'll see that the US changed its mind and granted her a Visa IN TIME for her to Attend the grammy's if she chooses. She chose not to. Which of course furthers the absolute HYPOCRISY of America on this issue and which others have already pointed out.

I think this article does a pretty good job of pointing out some hypocrisy as well, in more then one way. Furthering my embarrasment of being an american.

Oh no,that's ok Josh, you disagreed with me but did so in a civil way.I think people either get Amy or they don't,you need to remember that I'm almost old enough to remember beehive hairdo's and the original versions of the songs she covers. She's got that smokey, jazz club voice and I hope she cleans up so we can enjoy it as she continues to develop as an artist..

Oh and there's nothing wrong with liking Kanye :)

Like someone else already pointed out, you probably wouldn't even like her songs if she never did drugs. Drugs = good music, take away the drugs and you're left with crap. Its the same with all Art actually. I think Bill Hicks said it best.

And really, what singer/song writer/band member doesn't do drugs? Or didn't do them at one point in their carreer. She's just more vocal then most and gets rewarded for it rather then terrorized, which is mostly because she is British and not American - the British have a different take on drugs as a whole and America is just following along in this instance because Pop culture tells us too. The same we've done with so much of our pop culture over the last decade or so

That they with held the Visa as long as they did sends her a very clear message that her addiction won't be tolerated here. I imagine there might well have been other conditions attached to that Visa that might have been difficult for her to pull off in 2 days.

The average Joe drug user wouldn't have gotten that visa anyway, money talks average drug user walks.

The other points which might have been missed is either we revamp the drug laws or apply them equally and not make exceptions because someone has connections or money no matter how much talent they may or may not have.

There are plenty of average people struggling with drug use and have lost much because of the drug laws and the drugs who don't have some rich record company covering for them.

First, as I said, she got it in time to attend the grammy's if she had hopped the next flight. And if our stance was really such as your implying, why did we give her the Visa at all? Much less in time for her to still attend the grammy's.

She didn't attend because she's stubborn and in her mind she was probably making a point, "Make me wait until the last minute and I just won't come at all."

That's a bit over the top. Musical talent has a lot to do with how you perform live...and obviously she cannot do that very well. Kanye puts on amazing show after show, he may not be able to "sing" perfect notes but that doesn't mean you don't have musical talent. The man produces hit after hit record with no end in sight. His ability to "make music" is an incredible talent that Amy Winehouse probably will never have. She can sing...but she cannot compose anything. Without a man standing behind her just like Kanye, she would have NO hit record, no album, no songs at all. Kanye may not sing, but he raps, writes & produces tons of great music and without people with his simliar ability there would be no music..

Exactly! Not like the great music of "The Beatles", "Led Zeppelin", "Jimmy Hendrix", "Elvis", etc. - all of which was created without drugs...oh wait that is a load of shit....sorry.

Which pop stars do you look up to?

I don't think any of them were smoking crack. Not to lessen the seriousness of other drugs, but the beatles mainly used some marijuana and a psychadelic here and there. Crack just has that recognition of being the worst of the worst.
