Great toys but in practice these things chew up battery life very quickly. Great on a laptop plugged into the mains but forget it on an IPAQ on battery power.

Being a PC-Card I'm certain they use up more power than a micro-disk which can reduce IPAQ battery life down to under an hour. Even the extra battery pack in the IPAQ PC-Card add-on won't give you that much more.

Nice idea in theory.... Great price too....

nynate,

I think you need to try one before you blast it. I have one on my Ipaq, its actually a Toshiba Drive. I get quite a bit of life out of it. It does use the battery when it accesses the drive but otherwise it doesn't lower my battery life unless I am streaming from the drive. BUT I can load programs beyond belief into it along with hours of mp3's and movies. I just put a DC adapter in my car to use while driving and it works out just fine.

Hm...very good price. I check online the cheapest I found is at least $100 more. But here is the question for me. Do I really need a 5G HDD for my Ipaq? I have a 6G Nomad Jukebox, so I don't need to play MP3 songs from my Ipaq. And I also have couples of 256mb CF cards. Well, I think I'll pass this time...

depends...you could use a boot loader and load the full linux kernel on the 5gb drive and keep CE on the internal RAM/ROM. Lots of space for linux apps etc.

For those who havent seen linux on a color iPAQ, its quite impressive. You can rotate the screen to landscape mode and run X pretty well.

Wow, it's the harddrive from my iPod! And, yes, it does make the iPod look downright affordable. I'm kinda surprised that noone ever made a cool digital device with a built in IBM microdrive. 340-1000 MB is still a great size for an ultra portable datastorage device, etc. . .

I sold my Nomad to use my PocketPC as my MP3 Player, I like the fact it fits in a pocket. I just hope the battery lasts for at least 3 hours!
