Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham said new data this week would show another 5-cent drop in gas prices. He dismissed predictions from the spring that gas could hit as high as $3 a gallon.

I don't know about you, but there's no way in hell I'm paying $3/gallon for gas.

Unfortunatly, most people would have little choice in the matter. People need to get to work. I would probably break out the bike for my 16!!! mile ride :(

i dont think 5 cents really matters that much. only saves me about 50 cents a week. and by the way ".5-cent drop in gas prices" <---that says 50 cents, not 5.

Exactly. That's how I get around now, anyway, until I get an economical vehicle.

$3 a gallon isn't gonna happen. Right now the local stations are at $1.21, haven't seen it this low in a couple years.

Many people will say that, but when it happens people really won't have much choice. Their families & their livelihood depend on their ability to get to & from work. And like it or not mass transit simply isn't efficient enough or wide spread enough to make a viable alternative to anyone but city-dwellers.

Gas has dropped 40 cents here since the first week of june. It keeps going down.

Gas prices go down here faster then a whitehouse intern.

Gas prices go down so fast, they charge you half price.

And I'm spent. :D

what's with people always being so dependent on their cars nowadays?

are you guys just too good for the public transit? I mean, my mom and dad both have their own cars... but my dad works abroad so I get his (*NICE*) car for 11 months of the year. I personally have no problem with commuting... I think it helps the environment and it saves me a LOT of money because I don't have to pay for gas/parking/maintenance/insurance/etc.

But right now, I am paying insurance on the car, and I rarely drive it... maybe 2-3 times a week at most. And that's only when I go out at night with my friends (since buses at night aren't very frequent). Anyway, I personally like commuting, especially when I goto school (25km away). By taking the subway down to school, I avoid the traffic jams on the freeway and I also get either some sleeping time or some studying time while commuting. The same is when I goto work, I guess I'm lucky that the subway station is connected directly to where I work, so it's very convenient.

But I guess there are exceptions... Some of my friends live in the newer parts of town where you have to wait 1/2+ for the bus ALL THE TIME. So that's when a car would really help. and short trips to the shopping centre are also more convenient with the car, especially when you're planning to bring home something big (like a barbeque or something). But generally, if it's not too inconvenient to take the bus, then why not do so? you'll be doing yourself and the environment a big favor.

btw, I'm no environment freak... I just think that SOMETIMES, you can actually benefit by leaving your car at home and taking the public transit.
