Question. When you're playing 5 card draw without betting rounds (almost no skill involved, I know, but you still do everything you can to improve your odds), if you get delt say, two 8's, a 4, a 6, and a J. Do you go for two pairs by putting down the 4 6 and J, or do you keep one of them and try to get two pairs that way? Are the odds any higher, or even different, if you put down three cards instead of two? I know your odds of getting three of a kind improve if you put down three cards, but what about for two pair?

You keep the pair, drawing 3 cards instead of two improves chances of getting the 3rd 8 by 50%. Odds of 2 pairs stays the same.

From a pure odds standpoint, dump everything but the pair. If you were in a real poker game playing w/ real money, you would want to fold.

I would live dangerously and throw away 1,8 and the J, then pray for 5 and 7 to show up. big money if played correctly

True but it also depends on how skilled the other players are.I've run many a novice out of a pot by only discarding 2 cards.

well the problem for us is that we dont' play with a pot, just straight up dollar/two dollar/five dollar/etc. games. This decreases the skill factor dramatically, but oh well =/

Then you keep the two 8's hoping for a third. Otherwise you can try geekbabes ploy making people think you have trips.

Never, ever draw to an inside straight unless you want to throw your money away.

5 card draw is useless.

Texas Hold'em, Omaha Hold'em, and 7 card stud is where it's at. :)

LOL have you taken a statistics class before? When figuring out probability, you have to count the number of cards still in the deck, and the number you're looking to draw. Not just how many cards you're drawing.

z0mb13,

Texas Hold'em is the game on ESPN (World Series of Poker). It and 7-card stud are commonly played in casinos. If you're interested, you can find rules and so forth with a simple Google search, or play at Hold'em at games.yahoo.com.

I hate holdem and other card sharing games. I want my own damn cards. 7 Card stud kicks ass.

2 down, 4 up, 1 down.

So each person gets 2 cards face down. 1 card gets dealt face up. Bets start, starting with high card showing. 2nd card gets dealt face up. Bets start with high hand showing (of the 2 cards). 3rd goes up, bets. 4th up, bets. Then a 7th card face down and bets again. Its very tough, but a lot of fun, and easy.

easiest poker game to win money is to play texas hold'em with a bunch of noobs...they have no idea how to read the cards :D

Never, ever draw to an inside straight unless you want to throw your money away.

I've found in our group that when playing a one draw game, the tougher question is if you are dealt 2 pair, do you discard one and go for the full house or dump three and go for the trips? We often play with wilds though so that can throw a monkey wrench in the calculations. :)

If you're going that way, I'd only drop 1 or zero.
