Some Masters/Doctorate students I know at Stanford are gathering data for research they are doing there. In order to get participants, they send a $5 Amazon Gift Certificate to anyone who helps them out. What the process consists of is singing 10 (or more if you want) songs of your choice (10-40 second clips). You can pick any song you want as long as you know the artist and title. This gift certificate is a guaranteed reward. In addition, 1 person will win an iPod mini. Now, mind you that the probability of this happening isn?t terrific but they only expect 100-200 participants. So a 1-2% chance of winning isn?t horrible either. All you need to have to do this is a microphone and an e-mail account (it can be a junk-mail account if you?re worried about that ? its not used to verify your registration or anything) that your gift certificate will be sent to.

They are coming really close to their deadline so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Spread the word if you know other people that may be interested.

Thanks.

Come on - It doesn't matter if you can't hit a single not right to save your life - you still get the $5. And its not like they know you. So why not? :)

mainomega - I assure you that they have not stopped with the giftcards. There may be a typo somewhere because the data gathering was supposed to stop earlier but because they did not recieve as many submissions as needed, they have extended the time frame.

cheetoden - Thats understandable. But if you are, or were, a college student than you know how much of a bitch it can be to have people participate in anything. So they offer an incentive.

You will need to sing two songs with "La-La's", hum three songs, sing normally four songs, and whistle (or hum if you can't) one song. You can select which type of recording each one is prior to recording (or edit it later). For example, you can sing the first two songs with "La-La's", hum the next three, sing normally the next four, and whistle (or hum if you can't) the last song, making a total of 10 songs

Who's desperate for a $5 GC? Well, if it takes you about 15 minutes then you're working at a $20/hour rate. Counting on the fact that few high school/college students make that much, they're hoping that time wise, its worth it to a certain market segment. But believe me, it wasn't meant to attract everybody.

And for those of you that do participate - give them about a day to send you your GC. They have to go through all of the entries manually to make sure that what people submit is legitimate.

I just heard that another batch of gift certificates was sent out. So if you got your's could you post that you did just to show that this is legitimate?

Thanks.

I believe its legit, altho I can't imagine why they've had a difficult time recruiting people for this. ;)

Actually the funny thing is that most people can't do it for the same reason as you. They tried to mass-flier around Stanford and all of that kind of stuff but the problem is that about 90% of people have Dell's (or really any other pre-built systems) - which don't come with mic's. So even if people want to do it - they've found that mic's are just not as common as expected. I tried to get some of my buddies to do it and only those who are avid gamers and have mic's, for the purpose of in-game voice chat, have been able to participate. So I figured that if there is any place that people would tend to both have the hardware and motivation to get something for free - it should be here.

Just in case any of you were still interested - they haved decided to extend the dead-line for entries for a few more days. They'll change the website to reflect this once they decide on a specific date. So you can still get a $5 gift certificate and have a chance at the iPod mini.

I don't know why they planned the survey this way. Statistically speaking, limiting your sample population to only people with mics shows considerable bias.

Well you?re sort of making two assumptions there. The first deals with their sampling approach. In the event that they are gathering data as a representation of a population, choosing a stratified random sampling approach would lead them to concentrate on a group such as this specifically, amongst other groups of course. However, the second assumption that you made, and the one of importance in this situation, deals with the purpose of the data. If you get a chance to actually participate you?ll notice that they ask for hardware specs of sorts. This is because they hope to uncover any inconsistencies that arise, for their specific purpose, across a motley gathering of variables (hardware being one of them).

This wasn?t meant as a bitch-out post if that?s how it came across. I never really made the exact purpose of their data gathering clear, nor did they on their website, so I?m surprised someone hadn?t pointed this out earlier. And sorry that I can?t explain their work further but that could actually create bias if people try to over-correct for issues that they believe may exist.

The official end of the $5 Gift Certificate promotion will be June 15th. So many people from this and the slickdeals forums have participated that they have decided that it is worth it for them to gather extra data.
