5.8GHz vs 2.4GHz

Modeps

I have no idea what these numbers REALLY mean first of all. Will 5.8GHz phones interfere with a 802.11g/b network? Is it "the higher the number, the better"? I'm looking to get an expandable phone tonight, and could use some advice! kthanxbye

I cant wait to run my super optimized Caller ID program faster!

2.4GHz phones are really close to the 802.11 frequency, so they tend to interfere with the networks. I got a 5.8GHz phone, and my network stays working all the time, now.

Just the frequency that they operate in. I'd probably recommend a 5.8 if you're in an apartment building. If you have your own house, it really doesn't matter, unless you have a wireless network. Then I'd just get whatever frequency you're not using.

FWIW, I had 802.11b wireless network and it would drop out whenever I tried to use a 2.4 ghz phone.

It's sort of like how one radio station in my area is 94.5 and another is 107.9. 107.9 isn't any better sounding than 94.5 - they're just broadcasting at different frequencies.

A 2.4ghz phone uses the same frequency range as a 802.11G (and some 802.11B 2.4ghz WAPs). I should know - I used to have one, and whenever the phone would ring, the wireless network would cut out.

I have a Vtech 2.8Ghz DSS multihandset phone with 4 handsets and it has NEVER interfered with my 802.11 b or g.

I think the key is making sure your phone is full DSS (both up and down). Of course, this applies to whatever frequency you choose.

The advantages are that the 5.8ghz will need shorter antenna design and have less interference since unlicenseed 2.4ghz band are widely used.

However, under same power amplification the higher the frequency the shorter the operating range. Thus, the 5.8ghz will have shorter range than 2.4ghz phone under same output power.

1. No. 801.11b/g runs at 2.4GHz
2. 'Higher=better?' = No, Higher frequency has less range but more channels fit in the same band.

900MHz are still the best in terms of range.

I'm picking up what you're putting down. I've got a Linksys WRT54G for my wireless router... so basically I should, to avoid possible interferance, get a 900mhz or 5.8ghz?

I love ATOT, so many people with information to tap. Now, if only you all would pay for my house....

maybe I could make a website "http://www.payformyhouse.com" and you guys could go there and give me money? that'd rule.

I'm in a rare mood today. 😀

In that case I'd probably take a 5.8GHz if you live in a big apartment complex. Otherwise just get a generic cheap 900MHz phone. No need to spend $$$$ on a fscking phone.

And, if you can find a buy one get one free deal... take the 5.8 out of the other phone, and stick it in your computer. A huge upgrade from the 2.4GHz processor 😛 🙂

**I recall a thread a couple of years ago where the original poster actually thought this was a good idea.

I figure just get something digital. Even 5.8's are pretty cheap now, unless you want the phone for $20. This way you don't have people with baby monitors picking up your late night calls. 😉

Welp, I havent seen any 900mhz expandadable phones out there. I live in a house currently.

well 2.4ghz phones interefer with my wireless so all my phones are 900mhz. what's the point of 5.8ghz?

That's quite possibly the best idea I've heard all day... I cant wait to finally run Doom 3 properly!

What do you mean by expandable?
You need a wireless phone right?

Expandable == multiple handsets. I've got limited phone jacks in my house and dont feel like running wires everywhere to get more locations.

I got my parents one of these for Christmas. The have the base plugged in to the kitchen jack and don't need phone jacks anywhere else in the house for all of the other phones. It is great.
