Its not .223, its 5.45x39. .223 is 5.45x45. This is russian stuff. I know there are guns out there that can take both... But .223 abslutely WONT fit in an ak-74. Its on like a national backorder. Oh... anybody know where to get .50 for under a buck a round??

You can get corrosive for that. But if you have a .50 you don't want corrosive. :p

Sorry bout that, must have been a little tired.

I haven't seen any 5.4x39 around in a while and even 7.62x39 is becoming rather scarce (at decent prices) presently. Supposedly there is very large shipment of ammo from Wolf awaiting clearance through US customs.

It's actually 5.56x45. ;) There are subtle differences between 5.56 and .223.

In 1979, SAAMI cautioned shooters that the 5.56x45mm military chambers and throats differ from the 223 Remington sporting rifle chambers. Therefore military ball ammo may produce high chamber pressures in sporting rifles.

Taken from http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/223.html.

Edit: Currently out of stock, but a guy I have dealt with at the Ft. Worth B&M location tells me they are expecting a shipment any day. (Of course, they are ALWAYS expecting it, so take that for what it is worth. :D)

This is certainly the same mythical shipment I keep hearing about. The various gun forums are rife with rumor about the shortage and have created a surge of panic buying.

Haha... people panicking and buying large quantities of ammunition... that's what we need. :D

Well with the multiple personality disorder regularly displayed by the ATF, it is of little suprise. One day they might decide just to stop all ammo imports by changing their interpretation of the laws.
