damn. still haven't played the demo.

all of the reviews here have made the game sound awesome, but I think I'll still have to wait for a bigger sale.

This sounds even more expensive than the game was at release in the UK...

I bought it at full price and thought it was worth it. I've put about 60 hours into so far I'm on my 3rd play through with the Chosokabe now. Much harder then I thought. I beat it with Hojo and Shimazu the first 2 times without a problem. Chosokabe...starting location suckkkkssss, very hard to trade and expand.

I was disappointed in the game. It has many great features, and in many respects was an improvement on prior games. However, compared to Empire Total War and other TW titles, it has far less replayability and diversity.
There are only a handful of units, all the same for each clan. The bonuses for each clan is also, in my opinion, limited. Its more like merely choosing your starting location instead of a brand new faction. Compared to the wealth of countries and units in prior TW games, Shogun 2 is quite bland. I finished the campaign once, played a few multiplayer battles, and already feel like I've exhausted the game.

how much was it for you guys?

I spoke to an AT member over Steam about it. It was somewhere between £20 and £25, definitely cheaper than most Americans paid.. (even if I included international shipping to the US :D)

£20 is about $30, $25 would be $37.50... rough workings out.

It's on Steam for £20.99 ($31.50?). So I was probably a little bit overzealous with my claim... but it's close.

I made the mistake of buying this when it first came out. The lack of unit diversity is a turn off. Also since you can have multiple armies gang up against one without max unit limitations the end game becomes a steam roll quickly once you get 2+ good armies. Research is also too slow, even with the bonus buildings. I never got to unlock the last items in either tree before I won the game.

The loading times for the battles is also horrendous. I would say its easily 3 times as long as Medieval TW2 if not longer. This leads to simulating most battles, which is almost always a guarenteed win with few losses, when you have 2-3 armies against 1. Overall the only challenge seemed to be the initial 20-30 turns of the game.

If you like the TW series, just save yourself the 30 bucks or so and go back and play MTW2. While it would be nice to have some of the new innovations in MTW2, its still a better overall experience than shogun 2.
