About a decade ago, I found something at a computer show that really appealed to me. It was called "Thor" Speaker, and it was a mini stereo speaker that fit into a 5 and a quarter inch drive bay. Sound was actually pretty good, plus it made everything more portable, with fewer external wires & such.

Perhaps a year or so ago, I started hearing noises on the speakers. For example, I can hear feedback of a sort when I move the mouse around the screen - slight buzzing, even strange background noises when I am opening a folder on the hard drive. I am guessing that the speakers might be picking up some sort of RF interference or radiation from the innards of the PC?

I really like the convenience of having the analog slider volume right there at eye height on my desk to adjust the volume, but the noises are just getting too distracting.

Do speakers tend to have this sort of problem arise over time?

Indeed, it sounds like EMI. Try attaching a ground wire to the speaker box and fhwn try different points to connect it. EMI is not easy to solve - sometimes more akin to witchcraft rather than engineering logic. Also try changing the cables you are usng to that speaker box.

It has little to do with speaker age. It usually is related to wire positions, especially power carrying wires. Neat wres often are the cause. :)

I had a similar issue, where I was picking up a ton of noise in my headphones and speakers. This coincided with a computer upgrade, some components seem to not be shielded very well.
