1) Open up a damned account, it doesn't cost you a damned penny
2) Shut the fvck up and cash the check at your own damned bank
3) If option 2 is not available, go to a check cashing place that doesn't give you lube and then we'll see if you bitch over $5
D!ck much?

They aren't doing ME a service, they're doing their customer a service by honoring the check that their customer wrote.

You work at a bank? $6 an hr as a teller? STFU.

$6/hr tellers can make your life a living hell, if they want to. It's no wonder you have issues with bank policies.

If you don't like a specific bank's policies, go elsewhere -- but before you sign up for an account elsewhere, ask them for ALL of their policies, and read all of the fine print. Three months later, I'm sure you'll find something to bitch about, so you'll move on to the next bank. There will never be a bank out there that will do everything you want them to.

It's still common knowledge that unless you are at your bank where you have an account, when you cash a check there you will be charged a fee. It doesn't matter if the check is from the said bank president himself, it doesn't really fvcking matter, you will be charged a fee.

Jesus H Christ.

It's like saying "I went to Costco today, and I'm not a member. I went to buy something and they charged me a 5% non-member fee. What kind of BS is that, I'm doing them a favor buying their products!"

1) It costs a bank a hell of a lot of more money to cash your check than for you to deposit your check at your bank
2) Check cashing places charge around 3%
3) If you are not a customer of the bank, they have every right to charge you a fee, just like the check cashing places
4) Don't blame the bank for letting you overdraw, which consequently means you broke the law by writing bad checks.

I closed my Wamu account after the fiasco with them letting me withdraw more money than was in the account jus so they could collect the $30 fees.

So my wife has had 2 checks, one from Chase (who has branches here in CO) and one from 1st Bank. At both banks they charged a $5 check cashing fee.

Anybody think this is right? (I'm not talking about legal, but ethically or morally right.)

I need to find another local bank. Sigh.

I don't see a problem with it. You don't have an account with them, they can charge you $20 if they want. Banks are a business and bank fee's make up much of their branch revenue.

As for withdrawing more money than you had, the bank fee's are a bit much, and the way that they will allow customers to withdraw more money than you have can be deceiving. But I dont sympathize with people complaining about overdraft fees because if you have a pen, and you have a check rigsiter, you should not have to worry about overdraft fees. record whats going in, record whats going out; it's not hard

People who use their bank accounts on a cash basis are asking for trouble. I advise you to use your check register on an accrual basis.

If it was common knowledge, why are there so many posts above from folks that disagree?

And your Costco comparison is an apple. We're oranges here.

I've not had this issue very much but if I truly wanted to cause a scene I might try something like telling them that if they refuse the check for it's face value they need to stamp it NSF so I can go prosecute it.

If it is not NSF, refer to maker, stop payment, or otherwise returned I would make them pay the face value of the check. The check is either good for the amount it was written at the bank upon which it is drawn, or the check is not good.

Of course, I wouldn't ever actually do that...................

Who cares if they disagree? You can disagree with something like taxes, but that doesn't mean you don't pay them, or it's common knowledge that you have to pay them. Not one bank was mentioned where they don't charge a check cashing fee for a non-account holder.

As far as my Costco comparsion, it is the same principle. It's a business that charges a fee for a particular good or service offered. If it's that hard to understand, well I don't know what to say.

Actually there are banks that don't charge these BS fees, and there used to be a lot more, when it was against the law for banks like Chase to buy up all the little banks.

A bank is not offering me a "service" by cashing a check written on an account at their institution. All they are doing is living up to the commitment they made when they were given the right to offer checking accounts to their customers, in lieu of conducting all transactions in cash.

It is only because of extreme lobbying efforts that banks have twisted the world around to make it look like they are providing "services" to people, when actually all they do is insert themselves into as many transactions as possible and skim their piece of the pie.

They have become almost as worthless as insurance companies, which I didn't think was possible.

I dont bank there, but i had a check (from BOA no less), and to get it cashed i had to:
Drivers license
passport
take a $5 for cashing a check there

It was pretty irritating, I had just moved to the area and had to go home to get the passport. Considering it was a work check that had BANK OF AMERICA on the check, was the icing on the cake.

"Check cashing fee"? You'll have to explain this one. You're depositing a check into your account, and withdrawing the money, and they charge you? That's pretty dumb. On the other hand, if you're walking into a bank without an account, and want to cash a check...that's different.

As far as the overdraft fees...all banks are like that. Check your balance before you write checks!

Do you generally like to talk about penis? I thought we were talking about checking accounts and then out of the blue you start talking about penis. Weird.

Read one of the several posts who quoted my op, captain oblivious.

And both of you are clueless about what that situation was.

Doesn't matter.

Oh I read your OP when it was still in your OP...and I read it again when you erased it and others quoted it. My statement is still valid...
