I had issues with WF when I worked in a pet shop many moons ago. They charged the store owner a fee to verify funds for customers who wrote checks! Screw that. We stopped taking WF checks.

Find a local credit union.

You don't have an account with them, so they have no way to get the money back if the check bounces.

WTF?
If the check is written by a member of that bank, they most certainly DO have recourse.

The person cashing the check must be a member of that bank to avoid a check cashing fee.
I thought this was common knowledge? 😕

Why would they charge you $5 to cash a check? Thats fuxored.
I use Wells Fargo and I have another account at the bank I work for.
Now, WF has its own issues, but they sure as hell havent charged me $5 to cash a check. Try 'em out. I use their free checking to backup my 2nd paypal account.
All banks try to nickel and dime you somehow. In WFs case, they might try to charge you $5 for calling the 800 number and doing certain things for you like replacing a lost debit card. So be careful, or do everyting in person with a teller like I do.
Ive used WF since 2004.
AND if this werent enough I won the Grand Prize at the opening of a new branch. Ill create a thread on Monday about it after I pick it up. I have to sign a tax affidavit.

Thank you.
The checks WERE drawn on the respective banks.
One was the "payroll" (quotes because it's like $100) from my wife's "job" (quotes because she works a couple hours a week in daycare at her church), the other was the $200 settlement from her accident.
I just got sick of Wamu and haven't decided where to open a local account. With my UBOC account I wasn't in much of a hurry until now.

Credit Unions are about as non profit as those non profit credit repair companies.
The expensive suits and nice cars cost the guys that run the credit union just as much money as they cost bankers.
Big credit unions vs banks..............almost no difference.
(speaking mostly of Community America credit union).

I work at a bank. I love how people bitch about getting charged a fee for cashing a check drawn off of a bank they don't have an account at. Get over it, we're doing you a service. If you don't like it, you have 3 choices...
1) Open up a damned account, it doesn't cost you a damned penny
2) Shut the fvck up and cash the check at your own damned bank
3) If option 2 is not available, go to a check cashing place that doesn't give you lube and then we'll see if you bitch over $5
